tyre help for classic with new wrx alloys

I have got bug eye wrx alloys with 205 45 17 on a classic with prodrive suspension, so i went to 215 45 17 s03's and they rub:mad: . had them changed back. when to brighton cruise and looked at other scoobies with 17inch wheels which have 40 not 45's.When i had the 215 45 on, the rubbing was from the inside, however with passengers i reckon there was no clearance for the wheel to pass the outer arch. spoke to tyre dealer whom has done a bit of research and has told me that 40's would actually make the tyre wider and has explain technical jumbo for manufactures.

i was told at the last cruise by someone that they had heard this before regarding new wrx wheels on classic's. has anyone else had this problem, and how can i solve it.

i cant find a performmance tyre to 205 45.:(

Welcome to Scoobynet :)

40 is the size of the side wall as a percentage of the width (215)

Classic 17" tyres should be 205/45 17 or 215/40 17
205/45 are only made by a few manufactures, hence why most people fit 215/40's as the are much more common.

Newage WRX run 215/45 17. This has a larger rolling radius than required for the classics, though some people have run them without problems.

Is the car lowered and how many passangers did you have in the back?
Did it rub with just you in the car?

Thanks for the Greeting Dyney. I didn't know my pass word at work so I made a new sign in name, as me mrs will get a scooby soon (hope) see will be using mini cookie.

The car is lowered, but not that significant (Prodrive). It rubbed on normal cornering with just me in it. The tyre fitter (whom is a friend) said it was really close to my spring (rear) when the new tyres went on, and said try it out. we assume the rubbing was from the inside, however i am pretty sure with two in the back, my arches would also touch the tyre should i encounter bumps.

thats when i said, what about the 40's instead. he did the research and said a 215 is actually 222 in a 40 in that particular tyre. this is what i face!!!

a smaller depth of tyre will actually make the tyre slightly wider. i.e i think Bridgestone s03's 215 45 is actually a 218 and 215 40 is actually 222.

oh help.

everyone else has cool wheels and tyres, why not me.

the garage in mind actually used to supply all the tyres for pete at scooby sports, and they are rubbing their heads too.

Mine has STi8 alloys on it and 215/40/17" tyres (Toyo Proxys TS1's) and clears fine. I have had a BMW 2500cc straight 6 engine in the back and it never rubbed! (MY00 wagon with std springs)

I'd look at getting the geometry checked with laser alignment gear just to make sure.

I'm running the WRX wheels with 215/40's and never had a problem in 3 years. (running GY F1's)
The STI wheels will rub but they are a wider tyre (225).

I will get it checked tomorrow, i reckon it might be the Prodrive suspension, but the passing of the alloy and arch gets me.

i thought it was going to be simple.

Still no joy. The alignment is fine. i have spoken to a number of Tyre suppliers, including Elite's and they have no answer.

Stuck with do i go back to 205 45 but tyre choices are crap, or do i take a gamble and get 215 40's? my tyre supplier reckons they will rub (due to the previous reasons) elite's say its trial and error. at 500 squid a set its a big trail.

Just does not make sense. she will need to be garaged soon, as the tyres are becoming unsafe, until i can resolve this.

I've had New Age WRX wheels on my MY97WRX for 2 years now and have had no rubbing problems with any of the 215/40*17 tyres that have been fitted.

My00 classic with 215/45's on wrx 17's here - no probs at all.

alcazar 05 July 2004 03:39 PM

Got a '98 classic with standard suspension, but it runs WRX 17's with 215/40's (Goodyear F1's) and tows a caravan with 3 teenage lads in the backseat and self and wifey in front, and no problem with rubbing.

Oh, and I had 4 bikes on top too!:D:

No they don't! My classic WRX has STi8 alloys with 215/45/17 Pirellis on and it doesn't rub.

scoobyDAZZA 05 July 2004 05:02 PM

are they the same offset ??????????
wouldnt have thought 205 to 215 would have made that much difference really.

Andy Tang 06 July 2004 01:19 PM

Cookie,

I had an issue with my old car, a MY99 with the Prodrive WR suspension kit, and I was running wheels with 17" wheels that had an offset of ET45.

What tyres are catching? Bear in mind on the classic, you should be running 205/45R17 or 215/40R17. Taller or wider tyres may catch!

I was running 215/40R17 tyres on the wheels I mentioned above and they caught the rubber lip that covers the lip of the arch.

This rubber lip can be removed, it just pulls off and it is attached to the car by a 10mm bolt (IIRC). It stopped all the rubbing issues with my car, but that was due to the wheels having a dodgy offset!

IIRC the STI's run 225 tyres!
I tried Std STI wheels/tyres on my MY97 and they rub on the shock strut!

mark@wrx 07 July 2004 10:16 PM

Yes they do. But to get the correct rolling diameter for 7.5" wide rims rather than the 7s, you need to use the same size tyres as the new age WRX.

£500 a set :O for 17s. It's got to be possible to get £100+ off that price surely.

Dyney 08 July 2004 06:31 PM

 @ Mark

But this isn't helping Cookie Monster

Any decisions mate?

vindaloo 08 July 2004 06:47 PM

What offset are the wheels? There should be an ETnn cast or printed somewhere on the rims. Are you after a particular make of tyre?

Do the tyre place have any part worns in 215/40 they can loan you so you can take it for a spin (hopefully not literally :)) to see if it rubs.
