being towed without insurance
 

How frustrating. I need to get my car less that amile away, but i have no insurance or license at the moment.

I'm pretty sure i cant even drive the car being towed without a license ? Can i get a neighbour to legally driove the towed car even though i have no insurance on it

We discussed this about a month ago, and there was a big debate over a 3rd party driving an uninsured car....my view was that the CAR has to have an insurance policy covering it, but others seemed to think anyone with 'any car' insurance could drive it. Didn't really resolve it.

Basically, if it has ANY wheels on the ground on a public road, the car must be insured by someone whatever.

You CANNOT drive it while being towed without a licence for sure.

A towed car is classed as a trailer. You are not driving it anyway.

Errr....depends on how it is towed - if it connected by a tow-rope, it is certainly NOT a trailer! An unlicenced driver CANNOT be in control of the towed car.

I didnt say it was a trailer i said it was classed as a trailer.

Sorry imlach your wrong, IF the two front wheels are suspended then you can tow it

Having had a similar issue (had my license though;)) a few years back, my car had been taking away by the police as they believed it was a ringer (it wasnt but they wouldnt listen) & until they cleared it all up i could only remove the car from there pound if the cars two front wheels were suspended from the road or with trade plates.

So basically you cant tow the car without insurance and defo not if you dont have a license.

me too....otherwise im gonna get my wife to tow me and my 3 year old around so i can give him some lessons early!

The car has to be on a trailer or car dolly to be classed as a trailer. You need to make sure the towing car has third party trailer cover in this instance.


If it's being towed with both axles on the floor then it's a car, doesn't matter wether it's a rope or steel bar. In which case it needs it's own tax and insurance. It will also need a current MOT unless it's being moved to an MOT station for MOT repairs or test. It will still need to be road worthy as regards tyres, lights, brakes etc.
