Cock Pond
Mincing Lane
Titsey Park
Pratt's Bottom

Tyttenhanger

Dracoro 24 June 2004 02:28 PM

stevenm2k - south croydon mate. there's a few I ommited from my list that are in yours! :D

EddScott 24 June 2004 02:32 PM

Theres a place close to me that is spelled roughly Queos Goch and some call it "Queers C$ck"

Theres also a village called "Square and Compass" and there is a village around these parts called "Bethlehem" - the last ones not to funny but would be amusing to say you live in Bethlehem.

And as for the spelling of the places that are very welsh there no way I can spell the things!

stevem2k 24 June 2004 02:33 PM

Ah that would be right then. All the london ones will be about the same distance from me in Chessington.

Croes Goch perhaps ? Pronounciation would be nothing like you suggest.
Phonetically it should be
CR-OICE (as in V-OICE)
GOR-CH (CH as in.... well OK the sound doesn't exist in the English language)

If you live in Wales you should learn how to prounounce these names. Welsh place names are in some ways easier to pronounce than English once you know the rules, the way it is written is the way it is promounced. In English a single group of letters can be pronounced in many different ways, or indeed the same sound can be represented by different letters :o

My funny place name is from Japan, a tiny little village in the middle of nowhere where I got stranded at a railway station.
Saka****a - summed up my thoughts at the time.

(real pronounciation Sak-ash-ta)

Your spelling was wrong and was not funny. Also the correct pronounciation isn't funny. Taking a place name whose spelling is not funny and prounouncing it completely incorrectly, how funny is that?

At least I know how the Japanese place name is pronounced, which makes a change as I can't even read most Japanese ;)
