Lots of earthing cables, why?
 

I recently had a look under the bonnet of a my96 WRX and it had around six different earthing cables going to different parts of the engine and engine bay.

Does anyone know what this is for?

various reasons...heres a couple of views from some people who have them fitted

the car relies on the bodywork to give conductivity which as you know is steel (not the best conductor especially if rusty) the earth mod uses copper to earth the alternater, starter and ecu with extra points to body fixing. with electrical frequencies controlling fuel, timing etc it can't hurt to have better earthing.

Better smoother tickover.
Smoother acceleration.
Better DAB Radio reception.

Alarm now VERY sensitive!!

The key behind this modification is very logical. The accuracy of how a sensor reads data from the engine and transmits it to the ECU is directly related to the amount of electrical noise that interferes with the sensor itself.

Looking at the stock grounding job it's very easy to see where improvements can be made. It's also noteworthy, that the stock grounds (as with any grounds) will deteriorate through time. So doing this is a good thing.

Now remember, this isn't going to give you any sort of horsepower increase (though it's arguable), but it will smooth out the way the car drives and feels.

I've made over 40 of these kits for the classic scooby. They definately make a difference to the car over the stock wiring.

quite a few people such as HKS do car specific earthing kits,not all cheap but i suppose you get what you pay for! a well worthwhile mod...

lads, seems to me that all you need is a crimping kit, a few metres of good cable, some nuts and bolts, a few anchor points and off you go. Is it that simple?

Only relevant to older classics? Or could I use this on an MY02 car?

If it's that easy, that cheap and effective then surely the suppliers would do it as standard?

Yes you could make your own copy of the kit using a few metres of cable and a few crimps, yes it would just as effective as a bought in kit. Just need to decide for yourself just how effective that is.....

I did the earth mod. to my UK300 and will probably do it to my STi.

Main difference I noticed on my UK300 was it drove much smoother when the air con. was on. No snatchy / lurchy feeling when the compressor kicks in as you pull away or change gear.

Just to add...
Before mod, my Origin B2 used to alert LASER when the wing mirrors were moved!....
After mod... no alert...
It does definately clean up/help to remove/reduce the noise on the electrical system.

IMHO a cheap and worth while mod!
