Before I go ahead and buy one..anyone know any reason why a Mocal boost gauge should not be present in my scoob ?
I find it ridiculous to consider spending the hundred quid plus of some manufacturers..the Mocal is -15 to +30 psi, white faced and only £35 available from |
Lee
I have a boost gauge from PTS, white faced, cost about £40. When it was installed, I had it checked with a calibrated gauge, and it was within 1/2 psi. It's also fitted to the spare plug on the manifold Davy |
Lee,
I bought my gauge from PTS as well, and it's installed in a Power Engineering Pod that sits by the A-pillar. As the car is a MY97, I went for a black faced gauge reading in PSI. I bought it a week after a Power Engineering rolling road session. The car was peaking at 15 psi, and holding 13/14psi. The gauge reads the same! Possibly only 0.5psi out, if at all. I used the blanking point on the inlet manifold as well. I had to get more piping, as the length supplied by PTS was not enough. There should be a fairly lengthy post on the trails and tribulations of installing the gauge. It was posted by me and called 'Turbo Boost Guage'. The search facility seems to be playing up a bit and I can't get hold of it. If you have no joy, you can email me, and see what I can remember. Hope this helps Andy |
That 1/2psi is actually a poor attempt at a half. I should have put 0.5psi. So the gauges seem pretty accurate

cheers guys for the info.
no-one has come back with a "oh no the Mocal was rubbish it eventually led to engine trouble and me going bankrupt, my son's nose-bleed etc" so Mocal it is. I just don't fancy a black gauge at the end of the day ! I will probably mount mine to the right of the wheel, so its visible below the rpm. ta |
Lee,
Just to let you know that PTS will do the gauge with black or white faces. Also there is a choice of psi or bar increments. Let us all know how you get on. Andy |
Bleedin' 'Ell.
Had a look at the Mocal today..the face is crap ! I've not found a gauge yet (in psi) with a decent face. The PTS ones are in bar. The thing that nacks me off is that the gauges usually go upto 30psi which is overkill. Since I'm interested in the 10-20psi range I need a gauge that covers that spot well. If anyone has any pics of any gauges mail me 'em cheers |
Lee,
Phone PTS, they will do the dial with either PSI or Bar! I have a black face dial in PSI. PTS were at Trax '99, where they were selling white face dials in PSI. Try me, they do sell them! Andy |
After cancelling my order with Merlin the gauge arrived this morning !
gauge 30.50 t-piece (not required) 4.45 silicon hose 5.00 hose clips 0.32 thread to push on adapter 3.25 p&p 2.50 vat 8.05 total 54.07 Let me know what you think of the face.. http://www.scoobmania.freeserve.co.uk/gauge.jpeg I tried it..its actually very good so I'm thinking of keeping it now. What do you think ? Shall I hold off for a Blitz gauge ? |
Lee,
That's the same gauge that PTS would have supplied! It might have saved you a couple of quid getting it from them as well! Oh well! It's a good one, everyone I know who has them is pleased! Cheers Andy |
Whats more annoying..Mocal (actually Thinkautomotive) could have supplied one for about £27, or I could have waited cos they're redesigning the face.
The PTS one is £45 though.. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif I may design a new face and print it on some photographic card. That will look good me thinks. Just found this pic of the blitz one..now thats damn sexy ! http://www.scoobmania.freeserve.co.uk/blitz_gauge.gif [This message has been edited by Lee (edited 18-09-1999).] |
Lee,
Could you let me know if you can dismantle the gauge? The needle on mine is white, and I'd rather have a red needle! Cheers Andy PS - The £45 from PTS includes all the bits you need to fit it as well! [This message has been edited by Andy Tang (edited 18-09-1999).] |
Not wanting to brag..but god I'm good ! I dismantled the gauge and put a new face inside. Check it out...
http://www.scoobmania.freeserve.co.u..._new_face.jpeg The front comes off easily when the clips are bent back slightly. I don't know about changing the needle though that kinda looks permanent. Last problem..where to fit it ? At the moment I've put in next to the stereo so you can see it through the steering wheel. This is the same as Pete Croney's fitment..(nabbed this pic from him.. http://wkweb4.cableinet.co.uk/bolton...oost_guage.jpg But I don't like it there. And it sticks out like a sore thumb by the a-post. Hmmm. PS dial artwork is up for grabs if anyone wants it. A-pillar mounting may stick out like a sore thumb, but at least I'm not taking my eyes off the road so long!
Andy |
Anybody out there do a pod to accept more than 2 or more guages (not all boost ones!) that would replace the "binacle" on the top/centre of the dash?
If not, then as a suggestion for someone who works in Carbon Fibre. If done tastefully, would be a welcome replacement for what is a pretty useless place for storing anything except sunglasses. Also would be in easy line of sight. [This message has been edited by JamesH (edited 19-09-1999).] |
James,
TDI do a 3 guage one. So do GGR but its not all that A Forester Pod that houses the temp meter etc can be used with a DIN plate. Thats the best as it matches the dash exactly. Regards |
Just to finish off..
after mounting it a-la PeteC stylee, and knocking it with my knee, not being able to see it etc I have now put it by the a-post. And it doesn't stick out too much. Andy yes..its much safer up there too http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif |
I used to have some very nice guages on an MR2 hybrid turbo. Boost was mounted behind the steering wheel in a special pod (the plastic column surround was replaced with a pod). The oil temp, water temp, EGT and oil pressure were in the glove box. All guages GReddy jobs, all backlit. The four in the glove box electronic. Christ they were nice!

Do you know if Merlin sell a similar white faced Oil Temp gauge. I fitted my boost gauge into a binnacle from an Audi Coupe (the one in front of the gear lever), and replaced my ashtray with it - no mods needed. I now have a spare space for a temp gauge also. Do you have a contact number for Merlin? Thanks |
Speaking with Julian at Racelogic (Blitz Importers), he tells me you can order the Blitz guage with a green bulb installed. Just mention it at order time.

From my experience doing this simple mod I created 2 new sections on my website
