rising temperature on motorway, but not round town???

hi guys,
any one has any ideas here? i've just got home this evening from a motorway trip, where the temperature gauge has risen, then dropped, and it got quite high, making me worry a bit as it was getting to the top of teh temperature symbol. its an my98 scooby turbo BTW.

on pulling off the motorway, and driving round town, the needle just stayed static. any ideas???

cheers

Had something similar with renault five turbo.More so on uphill climbs on motorway.Temp would rise significantly.Radiator was clogged up and had to replace it,then it was ok.Tried to flush it at first and thought it was ok,water flowing through ok,but it still happened, due to shat taking up much of the space in the thin veins, and hence coolant not cooling down enough when passing through.

I am no expert but new rad sorted it out.Hope this is of use.
