Lambda aggro
 

Hiya peeps,

Last night I set about replacing my Lambda sensor as part of a methodical quest to find out why my MPG has dropped massivley for no apparent reason. I went and got a universal one from a motor factors for about £30. Of came the intercooler, the heat shield has been long since removed and after much huffing and puffing and tugging, i cracked the thread of a lambda that has been in situe for about 60k miles. I disconnected it and unscrewed it, put it to one side and unpacked the new one. AAAAARRRGGGGH it only had two wires not the three required.
Not to bothered i thought ok, i'll stick the old one back in until i get chance to go and exchange it for the right one.
So i screwed it back in, replaced all pipes and wires, fired the car up and all was well. Put it in the garage for the night and thought no more of it.
This morning on my way to work, my AFR meter looks like it's Jammed at Stoich. Doesn't matter what I do with the throttle. It used to "hunt" in closed loop and then under WOT sit one light in Stoich and one in Rich.

My question is this, is it possible that i've totally knackered an already failing sensor. I can't for the life of me think why or how simply unscrewing a sensor and then screwing it back in again should suddenly make it not work.

Removing and replacing the I/C surely cannot have an effect on the AFR readings.

Maybe i've split a pipe?

Does the sensor have to face a certain way in the exhaust flow? i.e does it have an optimum edge that needs to be facing the flow?

Could i have buggered the AFR meter? (Can't imagine how)

Anyway, speculate away chaps, just seems a little wierd to me

unless you've fixed the sensor by removing it? or turned a cleaner side into the flow?

did the sensor come out cleanly???

it may be it has failed,, they are apparantly not that robust and a bit of over zealous handling may have killed it.

the only way to tell is to try a replacement

Sensor should hunt until WOT then should show steady reading.

AFR will show:
Idle = hunt steadily
normal driving = hunt rapidly
WOT = steady reading around rich

I read somewhere on here that Halfords do a 3 wire sensor for around £25 which is suitable for the scooby. Do a search to find the part number

Did the Halfords thing and it's like trying to nip fog :rolleyes:

They have a part number but there are none in the country (Yeah right!). Off to get the right one from the same motor factors later, will let you know if it sorts it or not.

dont know what scoobys are like but when you replace the lambda on a range rover it takes a good thrashing down the road for ten mins to settle it in again.you could try this.

Think the halfs one is L300 oxygen sensor

does the Halfords one require modifications to the wiring to fit?

I believe the Halfords one is a Lemark Hotwire L300. I don't know where you are in the county but the Northampton Halfords superstore (Weedon road one) had one of these lambda sensors a couple of weeks ago because I had it in my hand. I decided not to buy it in the end because I didn't know for sure if it also fitted the newage imprezas. The guy there said it had been sitting in their parts store for yonks (it was boxed though). If you speak to them, ask them to actually look on the shelf NOT THE COMPUTER because they told me at first(after looking on computer) that they didn't have any but when the guy looked on the shelf he brought one back.

Worth a try anyway.

Hi Mickey,have a lambda number of a sti v5 my99 which is bosch A24-A710288Z010 could try German Swedish & French car parts ltd on 01159503723 on sneinton road in Nottingham used to be triax so sells all german car parts this is were i got my knock link sensor from cheap maybe worth a try. Steve.

Cheers Steve. I'll remember that. Gotthe right one today, will be fitting it tomorrow and then keeping everything crossed that it sorts the AFR fiasco out oh and the naff MPG :D

Here is the halfords part No. 180398. You might have to phone around a few stores.
I managed to buy the last 2, one as a backup.

MPG now back in the land of living and there's a healthy dose of Placebo hanging about too ;) I swear it pulls cleaner, faster for longer :D
