im still weighing up wether to get a uk turbo or a wrx. apparantly the 97 - 00 wrx`s were 280 bhp but ive searched importers and cant find one for sale newer that 96/97. where are they all?

leonski 25 May 2004 06:11 PM

any uk turbo vs wrx opinions from experience would be apreciated.

misty 25 May 2004 06:14 PM

Turbo 2000 PPP about 245bhp, on english super unleaded/optimax. WRX imports about 270bhp on japanese 100 octane, about 245 on english super with remap for our fuel. I think?? You need to wait until greasemonkey comes along he is the one true oracle!!!;)

so in that case a uk ppp is as good as a wrx anyway? what do they do on a ppp? is it just exhaust filter and chip and if so can you not buy parts seperately from other brands and get bigger gains?

misty 25 May 2004 06:29 PM

PPP gives you, New centre section, new backbox, modified ECU, new silicon intercooler hoses. The turbo spools up quicker, also it pulls a lot better lower down the rev range, and there is more torque available. If warranty isn't an issue most on here would recommend a tec3 remap, and an after market exhaust, or perhaps a full de-cat as well which should give about 280 bhp I think!! Where are you GM Helppppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D

If you have a standard classic - forget the ppp. As Misty says, Tek3 is the way to go complete with decat. Feels great - believe me :D
I think the official figure for the classic ppp is 237 bhp.
Mine (tek3, full decat) got 257 bhp and 252 ib/ft with a soon to expire clutch :D

cheers fellas your help is appreciated. so what is tek3? is it a remap or something and where do i get it done and how much is it. also if i get a decat i would have to change it back every mot so is there much difference if i get a sports cat?

Hi Leon,

My MY00 UK Turbo is booked in with Power Engineering (PE) tomorrow for a full decat exhaust system and a TEK2 remap. PE are one of several companies that can do these TEK remaps. They use some software called ECUTEK. The TEK2 is designed for a car with a full decat exhaust. A TEK3 is designed for cars with more modifications - think of it as a custom remap.

Loads of people on here have had a full decat and TEK2 remap. The result is normally around the 270-280BHP mark. A TEK2 remap costs about £750 at PE. If you get a full decat just make sure you keep the original centre section. I've been told this is only an hours work to swap it back at MOT time.

cheers yass make sure you let me know the outcome tomorrow cos if you get that kind of power i reckon thats the way ill be going. where is this pe place?

Geddon 25 May 2004 09:10 PM

errrr...why is Tek3 with decat the way forward?
Mine is decat with PPP which I thought was around 270bhp.
I thought it was only the newer age scoobs that had a different centre section with PPP.
ie turbo 2000's just get ECU, backbox and intercooler hoseing.

Hi Leon,

PE are based in Uxbridge, West London. Have a look here under the England section for other companies that use ECUTEK software:

http://www.ecutek.com/pricing/

I'll try to remember to post tomorrow to let you know how it goes - although I may be having too much fun in the car to go online :-)

Geddon I have a MY00 WRS with PPP and the PPP on mine consists of ECU, I/C Pipework, Decat Centre Pipe and Rear Back Box upgrade. Haivng looked at the centre section however it purely looks like an oem centre pipe with the 'Cat' removed.

Isn't that a deact pipe????????????????? ;)

The reason that you cant find 97 onwards cars anymore, is due to it now being impossible to SVA a car without a model report. You used to be able to put a steering aide on the steering wheel; call it a disabled converted vehicle and avoid the requirement of the ESVA test. Not no more; innit?

Evo mag list the RB5 WR as hitting 60 in 5.0 secs. So a UK MY99/00 with PPP should be the same.

£2000, available only from main dealers.

Have you checked out insurance for both as there can be a big difference.

Tek 2 and Tek 3 are remaps using Ecutek software. I believe the PPP on new cars now uses the Ecutek software to remap the ecu. Tek 3 is the one to go for as this takes more account of the individual car and whatever mods happen to be on it at the time. From the factory these cars do have a fairly wide tolerence when it comes to power. Some have more than others, they're not all the same.

My PPP'd car with a full decat ran 253bhp & 252lb/ft. A full decat might potentially give an extra 25bhp, but I think you'd need a remap to get the full benefit. Just sticking it onto the car won't necessarily achieve this. The oem centre with the cat removed isn't the same as a straight through pipe you might purchase from a 3rd party supplier as the oem will still have the silencer or whatever it is.
