Quick question about roaming profiles...
 

Every time you login/logoff is your full profile copied up and down to the server, or is it just the changes ?? :)

From memory yes it is. But you can define in group policy what folders aren't copied, like the ie temp files etc and also if the profile is wiped from the PC when its finished logging off.

That would be why the people with 200mb stored in there "My Documents" folders are taking 10 mins to login :eek:

Best i ever saw was 2.5gb on the desktop which took about 40 in the office and about 1 1/2 at the Lloyds box on the end of a not very fast WAN link :)

best compromise with roaming profiles I find is to split the "my documents" to their own folder out side the profile directory, just change the target and home path in AD, handy for users who have massive outlook data files, that way you should be able to keep the profile <10mb with all the guff on their own share keeping logon times fast.

we just limit the size of the profile - ok have to do a little explaining to the dummies who can't read the message on screen but its handy for the mobile users

Definitely a good idea to have a general policy of whats stored in profs.
Have exclusions for the "local settings" folder via group policy, so that temp internet files and history dont get copied.
Enforce a policy for executables stored on dektops, (we used to do a search and delete them :) )
Move "my docs" if you can.
You could warn excessive space prof users that you are disabling their roaming prof, so if their pc crashes they lose the lot ;)

I have a few users here who've ripped MP3's onto their PC's. Good 'ol M$ defaults everything to their profile :rolleyes:, so I have one user with a 2.5GB profile.
