205 1.9/Mi16 coil wiring
Do any of the 205 folk on here know which wires are which on the 1.9 coil?
I have the square coil which sits near the inlet manifold and it has 3 wires going into it - thick red, thick yellow and thin blue. The thin blue is wire 112 which runs to the tach, but I need to know which are -ve and +ve out of the other 2. Gut feeling says red is +ve, yellow -ve but I need to know for sure. |
I have posted this on the 205 GTi board I use!!
I will let ya know if I get a response! |

can't remeber off hand but just put a meter on it. when ignition on you'll get 12v on one and then you'll know
|
Heres the problem though Robbie:
http://www.kreature.co.uk/netimg/coil1.jpg 3 wires, so I could find the switched 12v with a meter, but then which wire provides the tacho signal to the tachometer? After searching, I'm convinced that the blue wire provides the tach signal. (Fitting a shift light btw). The shift light needs power, earth and signal, so my theory is: 1. Self tap earth into inner wing. 2. Fix blue signal wire to the white/light blue coloured thin wire in the pic above (tach signal). 3. Fix red power wire to any switched 12v supply. |

Chaps,
I know this is hijacking the thread a bit, but, I might be buying a D reg GTI. What should I be on the look out for, i.e in the rot dept. Engine wise I'm not to fussed as I'd probably do a few tweaks etc... but if you could give me an idea what I should check. Cheers |
No worries mate, problem is solved now and all wired in :)
Things to look for: 1. Pre 88 dont have the galvanised body so look for rust around the boot, bottom of doors, under the bonnet etc. 2. Check the rear beam - look at the car from behind. if it looks like /--\ or /--| or |--\ then it will need a new rear beam costing about £3-400 all in 3. Blue smoke on overrun indicates stem seals gone, on acceleration indicates rings gone (like mine :( ) 4. Anti roll bar droplinks tend to go so listen for any clattering/knocking over bumps. And the usual used car checks as well. |
Any of you guys going to the French Car Show on sunday???
|
Cheers
Thanks for the advice

Not me Gary - really want to but with Elvington all day Monday I cant get a passout from the missus for Sunday as well :(

DW,
looking at the list of cars and names im out on the track with sunday and they are all running Mi16's .... or 106 16V units......So by the end of the weekend I will know how badly under powered I am, or not. |
I was testing some in car video on mine yesterday - shame I cant send it to you but its in Hi8 format (old camera) so not sure if I can convert it yet. The homemade camera mount needs some work as well yet ;)
Going to go all out on mine after summer - full rebuild, 45's etc going for the magic 200bhp!! |
I have one of the in-car cam mount jobbies and will be using it constantly on the track on Sunday. Back window is best coz not only do you see the track but you fighting the wheel and gears also .....
Not sure im particulaly looking forward to bruntingthorpe though, bit straight and boring from what i can see.... Not really suited to my car. Im still mulling over the offer of a 200 BHP engine from my local rally car builder ... Have a couple of passenger rides booked though this weekend so will be able to see what difference it will give me on the track. I need more straight line power but dont want to loose traction or create too much torque steer making cornering harder. |
Traction loss and torque steer are not a problem in mine. The slightly heavier engine mixed with Grp N engine mounts (required) make the front end nice and stiff. I rarely suffer from torque steer andwith the 1.9 gearbox I dont often get wheelspin unless its very wet.
How much will your chap charge for the engine rebuild? I may be interested myself. |
I have no idea how much he wants ...... im too scared to ask :D but if i want it done then i want it done right so he will be the man i think.
|
I'll probably budget £2k to get engine rebuilt and Webers added. Will take the cost of the car to £5500 then though :(
Mind you thats still less than some lose on depreciation/fuel etc so not bad :D |
