225 tyres on a classic
need to no if these definatly rub or not. the car is a MY97 uk turbo completly standard and im looking at getting the 03 sti wheels which have 225/45/17 tyres on them. Is anyone using this size tyre on a classic? i have been told they rub by one person and want to double check really before i get them.

215/45/17 rub occasionaly, so will 225/45/17 will most probably rub

Had someone in the other day with a classic & 225 tyres on, way too big & definately scrubbing. I advised him to drop down to 215's.........

bought some wheels of ebay supposed to be for classic later found out they r for new impreza 18s with 225/35/18 rubber wheels do fit but need to get rear arches rolled :mad:

so they probably would fit if i had my archs rolled on the back. But what about the water proof seal the wings have on the classics. like a rubber that sits inside the arch i presume to stop rusting on the archs. wont rolling them remove this? causing posible corrosion later on?

It's not just the tyre that determines if they'll fit, it's the offset of the alloys too.
For a classic, the offset MUST be within ET50 & ET53 (i.e. 50mm & 53mm) to have any chance of fitting. The 18" wheels are usually found in 7.5" widths as these would support 215 and 225 width tyres. Take a P1, as an example. The recommended setup for them is the P-WRC1 wheels, which are an 18x7.5" alloy & ET53 offset with 225/35/18 tyres Pirelli tyres. This setup should not rub, but variations in geometry may affect some cars. Likewise, a few people have fitted the PFF-7 wheels to their classics. This wheel is designed for the new models (which have more arch clearance) and is an 18x8" alloy in a ET51 offset. A 215 width tyre will be stretched too much on this, but a 225 tyre SHOULD rub. A P1 owner confirmed this, yet I've spoken to two other classic owners who said they have no problems with 225 (both 35 and 40 profile) on their cars with these alloys - go figure ! Rolling the arches runs the risk of cracking the paint and allowing corrosion to start. It usually happens on the inside of the arch, so you could have them redressed to seal them again. Stefan |
