Anyone compared the R32 with the STi

I just have. I just wondered what anyone else thought.
They are just basically two very different cars!

I think one's a VW, while the other is a Subaru, I believe...

Facetious answer - Friday night, therefore had a few beers..... :p

Melina 15 May 2004 12:48 AM

Harry boy - it is basically a very English answer ergo facetious, or whatever the synonym was!

Anyway - I loved the sound of the R32. I don't know if the DSG system had anything to do with it. It was like a humming that kept changing base whenever I changed the gears. Having said that, the R32 lacked the pushing back in the seat feel of the STi and I did not think it stuck to the corners in the same way.

I have tried a R32 and own a STi02PPP PHP ;)

I found it firm and stable on cornering, less body roll than the Scoob but cornering speeds were lower. Yet still very comfortable on the Sh1te roads around our way ;)

Yes agree lacked grunt in comparision to my STi but apparently soon cured with a MilTek exhaust and remap IIRC IMHO

I did consider it but the wife said no, as only 2 door

Overhaul a very nice car :D:D

TBH - i wouldnt compare the R32 vs Sti as the sti is a league above
the R32 is wrx & focus rs territory
I looked at the R32 before i got my focus & having been a sucker for the Ford stable i plucked for the RS (6 months later it was traded in for the sti)

My 2ps

:flamesuit at the ready::rolleyes:

chrisp 15 May 2004 05:48 PM

the sad thing is

MY04 STI - PWR is 178bhp/ton
Golf R32 - PWR is 161bhp/ton

So closer than you think, both 1470kgs

Classic WRX in a different league again 220+bhp/ton ;)

chrisp 15 May 2004 06:01 PM

thats before tweaking ;)

peachy wrx 15 May 2004 06:06 PM

oh so if i decided to trade my MY98 wrx (276 bhp) in for a bugeye/newage sti would it feel alot slower than mine? always fancied the bugeye :p

chrisp 15 May 2004 06:08 PM

An STI is 1470kgs and your classic WRX is about 1270kgs ie. 200kgs lighter

Whenever there is a car comparison thread, you can count on Chrisp to pop up will accurate power to weight figures, no mater what the car but especially if it proves is car is best ;)

Steve

Ps I bet an R32 holds it's value better than an STi. I'd still hve an STi though :D

chrisp 15 May 2004 10:03 PM

I didnt say the car was better purely that it had a better pwr ;)

akshay67 15 May 2004 11:07 PM

To answer the thread question, I can give you a performance insight, based on my experience with a Golf R32 on the road.

I had a couple of bad starts at the lights, but as soon as the turbo got spinning, the R32 was spanked. Nuff said really.

Me in a 99, decat, Tek 2 so an STi should be quicker or thereabouts.

Didn't realise that the R32 was available with the Audi-designed DSG system?? Thought it was only offered as a conventional 6 speed.

PS. Melina - sorry about yesterday's flippancy... :D:D:D

r32 16 May 2004 08:47 AM

I had an R32 for a bout six weeks or so. I was a confirmed Golf fan for about 20 years, but the poor quality made me change. The R32 went back for a full refund because of paint problems. So I bought an STi. The Golf is a nice motor and it doesnt have DSG, only the TT with the 3.2 has the DSG so far any way. The R32 has a six speed box.

R32 very well equipped as standard, but the STi is in another league, particularly with PPP on. The golf doesnt give the feeling of having the power they say it does, 242. With the standard exhaust on there is a terrible droning around 3000 rpm, (motorway speed) which is very wearing.
Stick with the Subarus guys, better reliability and better Dealers, VW are very poor.

Chris L 16 May 2004 09:30 AM

I'm sure Dave T-S will contribute at some time, but as many of you know, Dave has had quite a few Scoobs and now owns a lightly modified R32 (Miltek exhaust and chip I think - last time I saw him, it was pushing about 270 bhp). It sounded great with the Miltek fitted - almost rally car-ish.

They are different beasts, but I would be honest and say it is the only Golf I would consider owning. Shame to hear about the quality issues though.

Chris

Melina 16 May 2004 11:24 AM

Thanks R32. The R32 that I currently have has DSG on it and is a Golf 4. It could be that DSG is not installed in the UK version.

Jiggerypokery 16 May 2004 11:58 AM

Nice article comparing the R32, STi and Evo...

sti-04!! 16 May 2004 12:37 PM

didnt know the evo came in blue !??!?

MJW 16 May 2004 05:42 PM

The Audi A3 2.0 diesel has the option of the DSG 'box too.

Harry_Boy 16 May 2004 09:19 PM

True, the DSG is starting to appear on a number of VAG products. But not on the UK market R32. Interesting to hear from Melina about the European market option however.
