STi Type R vs M5

Go on, indulge me, I have the chance to obtain a 2000 M5.
How would it fare against my Type R (310bhp). I've had run-ins with M3's (E36) and got the better of them. I've heard the M5 gets to 100 in 11.5 secs

Well, Performance Car got a V4 type-r to 100 in 11.9 seconds, in the wet, so if both sets of figures are accurate, there won't be much in it.

I've never driven one, but I imagine the whole experience would be very different, even if the acceleration is similar :)

I'd be tempted by the M5. Supposed to be one of the all time greats when it comes to performance saloons. In addition to the performance you also get build quality and a classier cabin than the scoob. A pretty good package, I think. The only downside I can think of is possibly cost, but that's without having checked it out.

Can only compare an M5 to an STi RA...

M5- massive torque, will outrun the Impreza, certainly once the speed increases. Low end its down to traction, on a dry day its a good match.

On the twisties its a different kettle 'o fish. Both are quick. Although the M5 won't change direction quite so quickly, the handling is sublime if you like rwd, and you can make extremely rapid progress.

Basically they're completely different motors- the M5 is nearly 2 tonnes of executive express in which your children are relatively safe. Lovely for motorways, electrifying for cross-country.

The TypeR is a stripped out borderline racer. Although the family may indulge you, its not the same.

Buy the M5 and save up for a type R for weekends- thats what i did (until it went pear-shaped, now I just have the Impreza:()

Thanks for the replies. I'm surprised to hear a Type R will do 100 in under 12 secs! Excellent! Was that in standard form? I thought it would only be slightly quicker than the P1's 13.3.

RRH, I would love to have both, but that aint gonna happen. I was actually looking to buy a 996 untill things went the way of the pear for me too :( the M5 may be out of reach now :(

what would scooby do 13 May 2004 12:08 PM

Don't forget that the P1 is a detuned Type R.. and the Type R's closer ratio gearbox gives it an edge..

I'd go for an M5 anyday mate - especially if you have family and doing motorway work etc..

The M5 will murder a STi Type R, especially when on the motorway where 0-xxx mph don't really happen.

there ain't that much difference buddy;)

Yes, it was standard. In the June 98 issue of Performance Car, they tested a V4 type-r against an Evo5.

The review itself wasn't great. At that time nobody appreciated the benefits of the DCCD, and they complained about the rear happy tendencies in the wet. The performance figures were interesting though. In brief:

30: 1.7 secs
40: 2.5
50: 3.3
60: 4.3
70: 5.9
80: 7.3
90: 9.5
100: 11.9

That was in the wet.

It compared well with the Evo, which reached 100 in 12.8 in the dry. :)

The 1/4 mile was done in 13.2 seconds at 104 mph, while the Evo did 13.8 at 104 mph as well.

Type R only appears to be quick as the M5 because of its great off the line traction, opposed to the M5's *poorish* off line traction.

On the roll, the M5's horsepower will separate the 2 cars. Just like it did with the E46 M3 on a few autobahn runs.

As much as I love my Type-R there is only one winner in this outing and thats the M5!! An awesome machine! :D

Unfortunately its way out of my price range!!

Cheers

Ive kept up with an M5, and we are talking going quite high in mph here  both cars in top gear, M5 wasnt pulling any on me, i was gaining very slightly, it did give me a stone chip from hell though :( no doubt a bit bitter about me keeping up with him ;):D

Tony:D (no i dont own a type R :p)

talizman 15 May 2004 12:23 PM

The power to weight ratios of the 2 cars are pretty similar so we can forget bhp/0-60 etc.

The M5 has lots more power, but much more weight to pull.... therefore 236 bhp per tonne
A standard P1 has 219 bhp per tonne so a 300 bhp Type R will be in pretty much the same ballpark as the M5.

A Spec C however (a la Tony Burns) has 247 bhp per tonne ;)

john banks 15 May 2004 12:49 PM

Perhaps rather than power to weight you should consider (power at wheels-drag):weight at say a speed where drag losses are 150 BHP.... assuming 50BHP drivetrain loss for the M5 and 76BHP for the STi, ignoring the M5's better aerodynamics....

(350-150)/1720 = 116
(200-150)/1235 = 40
