How can I check the processor
I've just installed a new AMD XP3200+ processor and a new motherboard and 512 MB memory but on bootup the processor reports as being XP1900+. How can I check its really a 3200.

you need to set the external cpu speed correctly in the bios IIRC 100/133/166 etc and it will show up properly
FYI: the 3200+ should run at 2,200 MHz on a 200MHz front-side bus (11* multiplier). Tech specs of chip here: http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/cont...docs/26237.PDF
Bios offers up to 200MHz but it keeps freezing up when I set it at that, dropped it to 166MHz and its stable but showing only XP2500+ on bootup. Its an Elitegroup L7S7A2 which says its a FSB of 400Mhz so you should be able to run the processor at 200MHz...

Have you flashed on the latest BIOS?
no I'll try that
got the right speed memory?? 400ddr
Lift off fan and heatsink, lift securing bar, remove processor, turn upside down and read processor number and match against AMD.com.
I've got 400ddr memory
you mean pc3200 you can take the chip out and on the chip it should have the speed rating on it, on the actual proccessor you can read it, did you buy it brand new from a shop? or from e bay where they say it can be run as a 3200 make sure its actuallky not a 2500 overcloaked as a 3200

bios flash needed ;)
need to wait as my bloody floppy drive is gubbed and I need it to boot into DOS to reflash the bios. If its not one thing its another.
Its a XP3200+ which came in an AMD sealed box, the issue is the setup not actually what the processor is, its definately a XP3200+ chip. |
Yep definately only flash the bios from a floppy bootdisc. It is possible to do it from Windose, but you're asking for trouble that way, as you probably know ;)
bios up to date and can only it get it up to 198Mhz (2180 Mhz)at normal voltage etc, Seems to be quite stable. Temp running around 48C
