dumb broadband question.....

When I had my broadband installed, it was a pipece of cake, the pc sits right by the bt box, so the micro-filter goes straight in the wall, no messing.

Just had a call from a mate, they have gone on to broadband, but the pc is at the other end of the house to the phone point.

Question is, can they get away with running the existing phone extension lead to the room where the pc is, and plug the micro-filter in where the PC is, or do they need to plug the micro-filter in at the BT phone point, and run a lead with RJ11 connectors from there to the pc?

Any help gratefully received.

U can use a phone extension lead, there's probably a recommended maximum length somewhere though. Use one here, no problems.

Agree with the above, phone extension will work fine, whether a reel or a fixed extension point. A microfilter is needed for each socket where a phone is plugged in.

Further to what Fig said: not all extension sockets will work with DSL. Im not sure but it may be because some arent completely wired. Cost is no guarantee either; Ive seen minty branded extensions that didnt work and Pound shop ones that have. Argos is a good place to try because you can take the kit back if it wont work. ISP's (piss-poor tech support -AOL in particular-) regularly fob people off to PCWorld for a 'special' DSL telephone extension cable; but theres no such thing. RJ terminated extension leads are available but wont always work reliably.
