Recommendations?

Hi,

I get the impression that the standard scooby brakes are a bit crap right?

Mine's a MY99 Import WRX... What would people recommend I upgrade to? I'm told it may need new discs and pads all round, so this is the perfect time..

Cheers,
Dan

Depends what you mean. The front four pot calipers are a bit heavier than ideal and the general design is compromised by a disc that's rather thinner than ideal. However, the calipers are actually pretty powerful. With the right pads, fluid and brake lines, you can get them pretty darn good.

Can you tell us what your usage is (road only/bit of track/lots of track etc.), and whether you've still got (and are plannnig to keep) the standard 16" wheels?

There's a lot of bull**** talked about aftermarket braking products, and a lot of people will blindly advise you to spend a sh*tload of money on stuff you frankly don't need.

Before going further, it'd be good to know the proposed use you're putting the car to, what wheels you've got, and, most importantly, how much you want to spend, after which we'll be able to give you some proper advice.

I know you said the car is a MY99 but do you have the 2 pots as fitted to the earlier cars or 4 pots (with Subaru writen down them) from the 99 on cars?

A mate of mine has a MY99 WRX RA and it has 2 pots as std

Ok, not sure which calipers it is yet, as i havent yet picked it up.

There wont be any track use, just heavy road use, so it sounds like just an overhaul with decent pads will probably do me then?

If it has the 4 pots then a set of Ferodo DS2500 pads will go a long way to improving them.

If it's got 2 pots.......Yes they are crap :) but a set of disks and pads can improve that.

See how it goes really, if you find the std stuff is not upto what you use it for then try upgraded pads etc.
If you find they are seriously lacking then it might be worth looking for a more serious brake package ;)
