sounds like the heater matrix (small radiator inside the car ) has got a leak .
get it checked out straight away
you dont want to loose the water and cook the engine !!

I agree, Heater Matrix.

cheers for the inout guys, but its not that. the cars done quite a few hundred mile since it started happening, and it only does so in teh rain. so really bad today. somewhere water is getting into the radiator inside then spewing out through the heater as steam. cleaned out the drainage holes from under the air intake, nothing improved. ideas??? fine when dry but impossible to use the heating when wet - just mists up the car big time.

cheers

If your sure it's not the heater matrix, then i would look at the windscreen seal ?

ah, now that was a bit loose - the cover for the box/air intake was not fixed to the windscreen - i also took it off to flush out teh drainage - would this cause the vapour problems becasue the water dosen't flow through the plastic cover?

cheers for your help

the amont of steam coming through the vents is proportional to the weather outside - today irt was awful, as soon as the rain went and the spray went dowwn, it stopped pretty quick

just a bit more info here, on lifting up the carpet there was evidence that water had been dripping from the heater box, down onto the centre tunnel. steam is aslo coming from this area as well. this happens as soon as it gets wet, and the vapour dosen't come out slowly then builds up - there is a point when it will suddenly start coming out from the vents. water is somehow getting into the heater matrix - not from the radiator, as the engine would have blown ages ago. Is there a seal that could have broken, or are there any pipes that could leak into the matrix at all?

cheers

Can't help but think you will have to strip it all out and rebuild it. I think it will be a seal somewhere in all the plastic mouldings, and water can get in from areas well away from the point you find it. Tried the wiper system arm mechanism?
Really bad problem, and smells will be next!
Good luck with it all, it could be worse, could be your clutch!

yeah Im having excatly the same problems: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recently on my classic 92k impreza Im getting alot of steam/smoke comming through the heating vents whenever I turn my heating on. Up untill this morning it would only do this when the heating was on but now its begining to do it whenever the fan is turned on.
Has anyone else had this problem? I have checked all the water pipes going to the heater matrix etc and they are all fine. I have also checked to see if there was any water left in the system and that is fine to. My only other idea is that it could be an electrical fault which I hope it aint otherwise Im in serious bother
Any help or advice is much appriciated.

Keith.

I am having this same problem now...

Smelly smoke is filling the cabin and making the car impossible to drive.

I have no clue where the heater matrix is, and what to check for.

Any pointers?
