Nasty noise from centre of the engine
I have a my00 5 door turbo which hasnt hit 30,000 yet. I had the service done at main dealer last friday along with cam,aircon belts etc. yestaerday as I drove home I noticed a vibration and an increase in revs. I immediately pulled over and could heard a loud knocking which I would describe as the noise a fan makes when it catches on something. I took it into main dealer today who say that its nothing to do with the work they carried out friday but there saying its likely to be a trashed con rod or something. They reccon I need a new short motor which theyve quoted me £2k for. How p.....ed off am I at the moment as I forked out £750 notes for last weeks antics. Anyone experienced anything simillar? Any one know anywhere else in the midlands I could try in order to get the cost down???

This could be a cam belt tensioner problem. However if it is the worst and you have run a big end then the circumstances fit what seems to becoming "the norm" for most cases ie failure just after servicing. I wonder what oil change procedure was used and what oil.

Bob, may I ask, what is the correct oil change procedure? Have searched but have found differing ways, although the common seems to be:
1. Run engine till norm operating temp reached. 2. Drain oil 3. Remove old filter 4. Pre fill new filter with approx 0.5 ltr fully synthetic oil 5. Fit sump plug with new washer 6. Fit new oil filter 7. Top up oil until level between high and low mark 8. Run engine till normal operating temp 9. Check oil level should be up to high level mark Thanks for help Ian |
Some also recommend cranking the engine over with the crank sensor disconnected.

Ive Seen a few of these.. Possible Big End Failure, So Best Look at this.. It Secret.. Ssshhhhhhhh

Yeah we have seen this b4 and its valid, apart from the excess thing, that needs to be defined more clearly as there is a VERY small amount of oil needed to take it from L to F due to the angled dip stick.
However not the only thing. Oil change procedure is VERY well documented on this bbs. bob |
BTW in pre-fiulling the filter with oil its not wise to put in a measure amount, you need to fill it till its full, that can take 20 mins or more as it acts like a sponge, the new filter types take less than the older ones of course.

Bully its seems a bit of a coincidence to me that this happened after a cam belt change. I would get it checked by someone else b4 u take it back to the dealer to determine the reason for the failure. If the dealer has cocked up the belt change n shafted the motor, then they should sort it FOC!

this kind of thing scares me as i do oil changes every 3k miles
