I'm just about to put 4pots onto my car and not being mechanically minded I am a bit unsure about bleeding the system. When bleeding it does the engine need to be running or just the ignition on?

I have a MY95 WRX without ABS!

Don't need either. Just fitted 4 pots to my non abs wrx and it was very easy. I've got a one-man bleed kit from halfords which is very simple but effective. To bleed the pipes you need to turn each bleed nipple half a turn (with the bleed kit fitted) and then pump the brake pedal until no more air is visible in the bleed pipe. (This is easier with someone else to pump the pedal while you keep an eye on the pipe and on the brake fluid level) When no more air is present in the pipe, tighten the bleed nipple again.

You don't need the ignition on as the pedal is soft anyway while bleeding.
According to the Chilton manual, you should start at the back left brake, back right brake, front left, then front right. Don't know what difference it makes?

Remember to keep an eye on the fluid level in the reservoir because if you let it get too low you will suck air into the system and will have to do it all again.

I'd recommend the bleed kit (£10 or something like that) because it collects the old fluid into a container and has a non return valve in the pipe to stop air getting sucked back up the tube. Did mine last month and I survived Croft trackday with no brake probs so I must have done something right http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

just to let you know, the bleed nipple MUST be on the top of the caliper. You'd be surprised how many people get it wrong!
