Why didn't my engine destroy itself???

My engine should be in pieces all over Castle Combe after my stint on the track today. I was going great for the first 2 laps, then my Knocklink lights up like a fcuking christmas tree telling me the engine is detting it's nuts off. So I back off and look down at my e-01, and peak boost was...............1.86bar!!!!!!!!!!!

Jesus christ, God only knows how it held together. Anyway I crawl off the track and pop the bonnet and dicovered the hose from the turbo outlet nipple to the Greddy boost control solinoid had come off, meaning the turbo was esentially running with the wastegate jammed shut

Anyway the car is running fine, no knocking or anything so I think I got away with it, but I'm worried it has damaged something :(

StickyMicky 24 April 2004 07:21 PM

that beats my record lol

mine was feeling really strong one day and it hit its first ever fuel cut, i checked the guage and it was about 1.45 bar

same problem, the pipe had came off, its scince done it again and it was up to 1.49 bar

ive scince zip tied the pipe on

DreXeL 24 April 2004 08:27 PM

I've cured it by fitting a jubilee clip.

I'm concerned about in not fuel-cutting though, I'm using a Dawes fuel-cut lifter, obviously set too high

jameswrx 24 April 2004 10:48 PM

Yeah, it'd be a good idea to lower the fuel cut limit mate ;) :D

Reckon your KL and quick, correct action (backing off immediately) has just saved you an engine rebuild ;)

That's the problem with the Dawes mechanical FCD, It's difficult to accurately set the fuel-cut limit. When I set it up I set it to cut at 1.3bar, tested it (it did cut at 1.3bar) then gave it one more turn. I thought it was set to 1.4bar, but It obviously wasn't

1.9 bar isn't so damaging as the detonation. Most turbos with a disconnected actuator will blow open the wastegate before the EGBP gets ridiculously high.

Trouble is that 1.9 bar will often saturate the MAF sensor's load calculation so you will go lean and advanced even if the map has some retarded run off for overboost.

You probably cleaned a load of carbon off your piston crowns, hopefully the bearings and ring lands are OK, there could be damage setup for later though. Impossible to say.

Bob Rawle 25 April 2004 02:22 PM

Boost like that in the low/mid is not going to hurt unless it causes spontaneous det, it can cause mechanical damage but you would have known (snapped rod), you could have cracked a ring land but that won't show until it breaks off.

Map in low/mid shouldn't max the maf at all, and if it did it would run it off the end so the last row of the ign and fuel map would apply. relatively low timing there.

I would say you got away with it purely due to prompt action.

The crank and bearings are ok at that, theres a few araound regularly hitting 2 bar mid range with std crank and bearings on. Thats provided you had "good" oil in it.

:( :( :( Could you explain this further John?

The thing is I've got a load of goodies to be fitted to my car over the next few weeks:

VF34 Turbo
Hybrid FMIC
550cc injectors
Power FC to be mapped by Andy F
Tony Law equal length headers
Walbro fuel pump
FSE Reg

I already have a full decat and a K&N Induction kit, along with the Greddy boost controller.

Would it still be wise to fit all that?

:( :( :(

It's had a recent oil change with Mobil 1 motorsport 15w-50.

john banks 25 April 2004 02:39 PM

As in you could have given the bearings or ring lands a pounding and weakened them with that big detonation event. Would go ahead with your mods anyway. Hopefully it will be OK, you'll know in a few thousand miles.

DreXeL 25 April 2004 02:48 PM

Thanks for the comments John and Bob. I'll go ahead with the planned mods. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the next few thousand miles ..... :(

Bob Rawle 25 April 2004 05:30 PM

Oil is fine, the boost itself is of no consequence being a limited event, as John mentioned its wether that coupled with det has caused damage, I would say not, whilst det is a killer its suprising what an engine will stand, assuming you had your iknocklink on max sensitivity and you reacted at the first sign then there should be no problem.

Issues relating to the maf are the hardest to legislate for.

Hi all, sorry to side track the thread, but what pipe are you guys on about? Just so i can check that it has a jubilee clip on. Dont want to shut the barn door after the goat has bolted and all that!!??

Thanks

Johnny

Johnny:

It's the pipe on the Turbo outlet nipple that goes to the boost control soleniod. I'm running a Greddy Profec e-01 which uses it's own soleniod, the tubing supplied is quite big and doesn't fit as snugly as the OEM pipe. I don't know whether StickyMicky was refering to the standard pipe or something similar to mine. I don't think you'll have the same problem on the standard pipe.

Johnny sti 25 April 2004 11:47 PM

Ah right now i know. Thanks mate

Johnny

StickyMicky 25 April 2004 11:58 PM

slightly over sized pipeing on mine as well ;)
