Do I have to replace all four tyres at the same time?

One of my front tyres is quite worn on the outside edge. I think this is tracking but haven't had time to get it looked at. Pretty sure that the tyre will need replacing.

As the Impreza is 4WD do all four tyres have to be changed at the same time? The tread on the rear tyres has about 4-5 mm left so they could last a little longer.

Thanks

You should replace at least the front two. Some say it puts stress on the diff if tyres on the same axle are running large differences in tread. Don't know how true that is.

As for 4, well that would be down to handling. Mixing tread depths, compounds or difference tyre makes could affect the handling and give interesting results when pushing the car.

I've always replaced all 4, but that's usually because they've all worn evenly as I rotate the wheels every 5K or so.

Thanks ozzy, Wouldn't consider changing only one tyre. I've always done front together or back together and when I had a GTIR I replaced all 4 at the same time. Money wise I could do with getting 2 now and 2 next month.

Ozzy I think is dead right.
Changing all 4 is the best and the car will feel really good when done, but £££ is also a consideration.
Buy 2 just before you are paid, and another 2 the day after you are paid!
Sorry, 911

F*ck me they must be mighty tyres if it takes 5K to do one rotation :)

I've just got through my first set after 21K without rotating. I know I should've.

21K on one set. Jeez I need to drive the car harder. :)

Don't worry, I had 29K out my first set of Pirelli's, 16K out my Goodyears and 22K out my latest Toyo's. I've just got into the habit of regulalrly rotating my tyres as I do the majority of miles on motorway commutes. Dealer usually does this for me at each service, so its more like 7K.

It does costs a lot to replace all 4, but given that I've had 1.5 yrs out of each set on average, the costs aren't that great. If I was going through 4 every 6 months, I'd think differently.
