What brand of petrol does everyone use? From personal experiance I have found BP and Shell (SUL) to be about the best, Esso makes the car run like a 'bag of spanners', but does anyone else have a preference?

Dave (sick of driving round at a mpg-maximising steady 56mph looking for Shell stations!)

I always use Shell Super , the scoob runs better in comparison with other brands of fuel. Graham WRX.

I'm a Texaco man. I agree shell's not bad tho and a lot easier to find. V5 Sti.

With out a doubt Texaco petrol seems to be the best and have always used if for years whenever possible. Car seems to run better.

Have found Esso/ BP OK along with Shell.

Not been impressed with Jet/ supermarkets some unknowns..then again you do pay for what you get and all petrols are not the same.

SUL does seem to be better than NUL giving better accelration and MPG but at quite a price premium.

My cars mapped for 95 but I always use 97 mostly from Esso as I pass two everyday that sell super. Once had to fill up with supermarket 95 (Safeway) pick up was awful.

i used shell super for ages. When it went up i switched back to BP.
The difference was very noticable and mpg went down again. Back on shell super now and wont be changing again.

My camper seems happy enough since the LPG conversion, wonder if the Scooby would like some too http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Paul Wilson, noticed your from the Aylesbury area, i'm near there, but regarding your petrol post try the Q8 garage at the COW-ROAST on the way to Berkhampsted the sul they sell is 98ron and if you do a bit of shopping at the Tring tesco's you get 2p a litre off.rik

I've always used BP. Normal for everyday use( The grind to and from work ) or SUL for weekends and fun days.
I once tried supermarket petrol!
BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!

I use Texaco, been using it for years now.
I remember a engineer telling me that the stuff they use with it for the clean system 3
does actually work !
plus I now have 11,500 Texaco points!
if I have to use another garage other then Tex, I'll only use a brand name like Shell or BP

I always like Esso . . . shame they dont do tiger tokens anymore, quite fancied saving up for my own tiger.

rik.c.,
I'd be very surprised if the petrol at Q8 was 98 RON, as none has been refined in the UK for a good 6-9 months. Much more likely that they haven't relabeled the pump, Every few weeks I come across somewhere that still states 98 RON, BP's are a favorite.
Cheers anyway mate

There was a similar post on this a while ago (Using Super Unleaded on MY99 & MY00 cars). Someone called Scutter replied that as all the major brands source their fuel from the same places within a region, thers houldn't be any great difference, i.e. "I was told by a guy who used to work for BP that most of the fuel in the south of England comes from ESSO in Fawley and most of the fuel up North comes from BP Grangemouth regardless of the brand on the stations."

Is this true?

Also on same thread, somewhere, if you buy supermarket fuel it will probably be the stated RON exactly, whereas from the big players it might be higher.

Given the fact that the fuel in the South East comes from Esso, one might (cynically) expect Esso to have the best fuel.

From my experience (MY99) Sainsbury's Unleaded did not agree with the Scoob, currently running it on Esso SUL cos the Esso garage is my nearest "quality" garage. (The regulars there know my name now, probably one for the MPG thread http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif!) Scoob definitely runs better for it (smoother), and seems to do a bit more MPG than on normal unleaded, no more power though.

On the odd occasions I've filled up elsewhere, couldn't say I've noticed more much difference - the weather seems to make more difference than the petrol!

Cheers

Simon
