Assuming it's MSN Messenger you mean:

Launch Messenger.
Tools/Options/General

There are tick-boxes to stop it auto-launching when you boot into Windows and options to prevent it singing on upon internet connectivity.

To remove it from your PC - assuming it is Windows Messenger (as bundled with XP) and not MSN Messenger, then:

Shut down Windows Messenger, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and anything else which might have hooks into Windows Messenger. Thrn hit

Start > Run and enter

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

into the run dialog box. Hit Enter/OK and Windows Messenger will be removed.

Also with XP SP1, you can uninstall Messenger from the control panel.

In Outlook Express, click on Tools, Options, General

Make sure Messenger is not checked.

If it is, you will need to go into the Messenger settings & clear the checkboxes again. This time they will stay cleared.

I found by far the easiest way to guarantee it will behave is to uninstall (as above) then re-download/install from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/default.asp
after reinstalling, clear check boxes as before and all should now be hunky-dory.
