Is there a big sand bank above sea level in the middle.

I have claimed this to my friends many times, but everyone keeps telling me I am wrong. Am I?

Mr.Cookie 08 April 2004 12:21 AM

also 6 miles aint far off half it's narrowest bit which iirc is ~20 miles

imlach 08 April 2004 12:30 AM

English Chanel?

I thought Chanel was french and came in the No.9 variety?

Oh, "channel"....sorry :)

imlach 08 April 2004 12:32 AM

The spelling & maths on SN these days - I don't know :

1) "chanel"
2) "also 6 miles aint far off half it's narrowest bit which iirc is ~20 miles" - 6/20 is nowhere near 10/20 :)
3) "isle of white"

I ask you!

Tiggs 08 April 2004 12:37 AM

imlach......you may think you're being funny but if these people have genuine problems with reading and writing you won't feel so good about it.....bullying the thick kid in class was never cool and it doesn't make it cool now we're all grown up.

Givn 957% of posts on hear have bad spelling & mathamatics, I recon your shouting up the wrong branch. 9 out of 7 people agree with me.

Mr.Cookie 08 April 2004 12:46 AM

6 is closer to 10 than it is to 0, and my math is just fine thanks, my english may suck but to be fair i don't care :p

I know, I'm just a pedant. No offence meant Mr Cookie.

Just for the mathematicians out there, 6 is also closer to 8 than it is to 3. Interestingly, 22B hex equals 555 decimal (ah, the old ones are the best!).

Mr.Cookie 08 April 2004 12:55 AM

imlach no offence taken :p

Oh and by the way there's a full stop in Mr.Cookie :p ;) :D

No, it is an abbreviation mark. ;)

Dave T-S 08 April 2004 08:07 AM

Imlach
LOL :D

My spelling/grammar alert went off too, and was going to post the same, including the Chanel/French thing, but you beat me to it :D

BTW,

mathamatics
Care to have another try ;) :D (or was it deliberate ;) )

Actually, Fowler's Modern English Usage says there's no need for a full stop when the last letter of the abbreviation is the same as the last letter of the real world. So "Mr" is short for "Mister" and doesn't need a full stop.

Where's MarkO when you need him? ;)

ChrisB 08 April 2004 08:52 AM

I'm sure we can crank up the generator to let Mark post for five minutes later on :D

Dave T-S 08 April 2004 09:17 AM

Where's Otway? In Edinburgh, IIRC :) Oh bugger, that's where i'm going on Sunday, better put a disguise on :D

Errr.....I'm more worried that's the only spelling mistake you spotted. Try again, and decide for yourself if it was deliberate! :)

Dave T-S 08 April 2004 11:11 AM

Don't worry, I did spot the others, just tongue in cheek from me ;)

LOL @ Imlach complaining about people's spelling and maths.
957% of posts? That would mean there are more posts with errors than there are posts. I think you probably meant 95.7%!

Dracoro 08 April 2004 12:11 PM

BMWhere? - Errm, I think you'd better look up the word sarcasm and irony in the dictionary. ;) :D

Hello

The level of spelling and grammar on the internet as a whole is quite shocking. I am not sure if it is because people feel that the internet is an "informal" place and as such can't be bothered to think about the way that they write.

What worries me more is that I receive emails written in a similar style, and I do not think that is acceptable in business.

Having said all that, I am probably just particularly @nal as I even use capital letters and punctuation in text messages!

Steve.

fatherpierre 08 April 2004 12:18 PM

I'll bet you typed that reply very carefully and checked it a couple of times, just to be sure, ;)

farmer1 08 April 2004 12:18 PM

Not just you mate, even though my spelling is appauling to say the least. I still try and make my messages legible.

Totally agree. One of my pet hates too. However, I think you are being too charitable - my pet theory is that the majority of people using the internet (present company excluded, naturally ;) ) are just plain thick!
Look at the shocking amount of mistakes in thread headers on here (that can't be edited)
