Thanks Lads,

I got all excited there for a moment as I am from Ireland and Shell are now selling V-Power unleaded here but just after posting my query here I looked up their website to find out the stuff in Ireland is only 95ron. I wonder why is it different in Germany, lucky ye...

BMWhere? 01 April 2004 04:03 PM

Because SUL in Germany is 98RON and normal unleaded is 95RON, so Shell has to beat 98RON or its nothing special. Originally we had 99RON Optimax which was hugely successfull over other brands and Shell Deutschland decided to capitalise on the popularity and go 1RON further! Thing is in Germany everyone drives powerfull BM's and Mercs at extremely high speeds on the Autobahn and they're all obsessed about cars and going fast so when they're told you'll get more power from this fuel they can't get enough of it - even if it makes no noticeable difference! ;)

Saw it for sale in a Shell garage on my recent visit to Amsterdam.

127c/litre  if I remember correctly.

Not sure what RON it is though.

In Greece there are two V Power fuels. The plain V Power fuel is 95 RON and the V Power Racing fuel is 99+, which means more than 99 RON.

We also have BP Ultimate at 100 RON and EKO Kinitron also at 100 RON.

Advertised everywhere in Portugal assumed it was just their version of Optimax.

Sonic and Harry,
Below is reply from an email I sent basically telling Shell that I felt they had missed a very good opportunity to market the first proper high octane fuel in Ireland::

Thank you for your recent e-mail.
Shell V-Power is a new unleaded petrol with an exclusive formulation, which has been designed by Shell’s fuels experts to help protect engines from the build up of performance-sapping deposits and to help actively remove deposits that have already built up.
As Shell V-Power is designed to actively clean up and prevent the build-up of power sapping fuel system deposits, this can help to keep the vehicle’s precision fuel injection systems operating efficiently. Repeated use of new Shell V-Power can actively remove deposits from your engine, help to restore your engine’s performance and can give you protection from fresh deposit build-up.
The formulation used to make Shell V-Power has undergone rigorous engine testing, both on the road and on test bed engines, proving both the keep clean and clean-up performance of this fuel. We have extensive test results which show how removing and preventing the build up of deposits in the engine improves engine performance.
We carried out extensive pre-launch market research (as we do in all countries), the results of which showed that V-Power is what the Irish motorist wants at this time: a fuel that can offer real performance and protection benefits.
Fuels with an octane rating greater than 95 attract significantly higher levels of fuel excise duty which would make it an unattractive proposition to the majority of motorists.
We regularly review the range of fuels we offer to ensure we continue to meet our customers’ needs. We conducted extensive market research which indicated to us that the time was right to introduce a brand new petrol which could offer performance and protection benefits.
I do hope that this helps to answers your questions and that you will choose to try V-Power in the future.
Kind regards,
Kathryn Atkinson

Replied restating the case for a true high octane fuel here and asking them to keep it in mind for future developments but I wouldn't hold your breath. Perhaps it would help if we could organise further emails to Shell Ireland?? All interested to kathryn.atkinson@shell.com!!

Marcus,

I totally agree because we are starved of good high octane petrol in Ireland. Even the SUL we have is still sh*te.
