Rear Light Problems

Anyone had or heard of or know how to solve the following problem - MOT is due week after next so need to get it sorted quickly (and cheaply)...

When no 'normal' lights are on and braking, the offside brake light is not very bright - it is fact only the normal tail light. The other side of this, is that when lights are on, it appears that the brake light is not working - this is because when lights are on, the offside tail light is as bright as the brake lights.

To me, it sounds like the lights have become confused and somehow swapped over (tail - brake and brake to tail) on the offside only, if you know what I mean...

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Paul

hi paul

sounds like you may have the wrong buld in the rear or have fitted it wrong check the pins on the bulb line up with the slots for the bulb holder. some can be fitted round the wrong way or the buld filament(sp) may have broken and be shorting on the other filment in side the bulb

Thanks Adrian but I checked all the obvious things like that - swapped with the other side etc, so I know the bulb is the right bulb and that it does work ok.

Sounds like an earth problem.

Check that the whole light unit on that side has a good earth point, and that it's not loose, corroded etc.

Then check the contacts at the bulbholders, again for corrosion, surface coating etc.

I know a good Auto Electrician. Cheap too! I've used them a few times and they normally take the car in on same day as phone call!

All sorted...

Cheers chaps, esp. Alcazar and all who agreed.

Five minutes and quick wipe of the bulb holder appears to have done it. It looked as clean before as it does now  damn dirt particles... Still at least it get as far as an electrician to solve :D:D:D

Cheers skoobidude, I'll bear them in mind in future if I need one.

Cheers again Chaps

One happy customer.
