Is it OK to buy and download onlione or better to buy the disc. Which one is best to get.

I would go buy from a shop just incase you need to reinstal

PC world do quite a few Symantec Sophos McAfee

If you want a quick virus check go to the above sites most do online scanning

If you want a free checker then I can recommend Grisoft AVG. Its been fine for me and I've been using it for years (its free for private use).

As Beefy says, go with AVG.

Although I'm biased - Paying for something gives you a bit more clout when the **** hits the fan. You can get free tyres for your car, but I'd rather have F1's.

To answer your question, make sure you can download again if needed, and check if you need to pay for that download.
