How big a trailer can I tow with a Nissan Almera 1.4?

I am moving house soon and the only car that the family own with a tow bar is a nissan almera 1.4 Si MY95, I don't want to fork out over a grand for removals when I am only moving a couple of miles.

I was hoping to hire a 8 or 10 foot trailer will this be ok?

Cheers
James

There is a site which lists trailer weights and regulations - do a Google as I can't find my print-outs (probably a DoT one). But you will be pretty restricted on a 1.4 Nissan. Why not hire a Transit for a day or so. Much less hassle I would have thought? DL

I thought about hiring a 7.5 ton van but I am only 21 so that is a no go, I am buying a converted loft in the town centre so I am having a few floors laid etc and was hoping to move over the space of 2 weeks as the developer will let me move my stuff in once exchanged contracts. ( already agreed 2 week delayed completion)

I also need to move large shed to my parents place so I can keep tools and still have a small workshop hiring a trailer would make this easy.

If it was a one day move I would just get someone to hire a van but I have quite a lot of things to do in the 2 weeks.

Not sure what to do really.

Does your licence allow you to tow trailers?
People who passed their test after a certain date are no longer automotically allowed to tow trailers, they have yto sit a second "trailer" test.
The dvla website gives details.
As for towing weights...as a very very rough guide, you should aim to tow something that in toal (trailers weight plus payload) weighs between 85 and 100% of the cars weight. Seeing as its only a 1.4 you are really looking at the lower end of that scale.

Most owners handbooks list max towing weights etc.

Hire a Luton Van for about £50-£60 per day.... cheaper for a 3 day hire though.
