Off Road 4x4 driving days - what are available?
Its a present for my Dad's 60th birthday :)
For the last 5 years he's been driving Range Rovers, Shoguns etc but the closest he's got to off road is his gravel driveway :D:D Anyone been on these before? which do you reccommend? Are passengers allowed? Any advice greatly received :) Preferably in the SE England area Thanks Justin |
Hi, Boots & Argos do the off road packages, not been on one but their websites have all the details and there are venues across the country so should be something in your area. Why not go completely different & book your Dad a rally day? I'm thinking of that for my Dad-taking the camcorder-mind you he won't thank me for it :o
Hope it helps, ali |
pretty sure red letter days do something to, ill have to dig out the brochure.

Sorry about SE England but we went on the Baskerville Challenge, vaguely Hay on Wye area. Commendable. We went via a multi-activity holiday, but you should be able to get there yourself. (Not sure how - tried Google quickly, didn't show the 1-day courses...)

Land Rover run such events around the country. I have the information about it at home, but I could get it tomorrow - as I'm not there just now:)
Where abouts are you? I have various magazines that would probably say where the off road centres are; there's actually quite a lot - but not always that noticable:) |
We're based near Croydon Surrey
I've heard of the Boots / red letter type activities, I was wondering if there were any specialist companies that do this too? Just wondering about VFM and quality of the day - I doubt he'd like to wait around for 20 others to do the course then have 15mins himself IYSWIM Any experiences good or bad? how well organised are the Boots / RL days? Ooooh let see where google takes me :) Thanks |
I shall have a look tonight:)

Jay - bingo
It's a whole day, and these guys train the pros. Baskerville Hall is not such a bad place either. |
Thanks Brendan, looks really good.

We were really pleased with it, they are really competent - and (perhaps as it was something like 4 January) it was just us two and the instructor for the whole day. Vaguely 100 quid (maybe 80, maybe 120) 8 yrs ago, but that's without lodging. You won't do more than 10mph, but you won't want to! Guy used a 1948 Landy, bashed to hell, brilliant. Said they trained Camel Trophy people there. They're about your Dad's age too ;)

i've done a couple of these and there really good fun. we went to east grinstead in kent on a red letter 4 x 4 day. it was good fun and you got to drive different types of 4 x 4 vehicles.
the best one we did was at rockingham (near leicester) my dad got it free when he bought his freelander. (i'm sure anyone can go though) this was a really interesting and challanging course and lasted a good few hours. refreshments were provided and the instructers really knew there stuff. well worth looking into. |

Thanks for the pointer, I'll consider it
