The girlfriends considering buying a brand new car. She already wrote one off :rolleyes:

Shes looking at Puntos, saxos, 206's blah blah blah.

Whats the general opinion, new car or say one thats 1 - 2 years old?

Personally id go 1-2 because i know she'll just ruin a new car.

1 year old, been run in for you and so has the price

Never brand new unless there is a cracking finance or insurance deal which will offset the depreciation. Otherwise do like me, I have a little C3 HDi to run around in, 5 months old, 5,500 miles when I bought it for 7.8k versus 11.3k list.

Most dealers are wise to that now,also you can get good discounts on new.

I have never seen the point of buying a car that loses a thousand or two as you drive it away from the showroom. Bought a cracking Ford Ka for daughter - 1996 49k miles at £2800. Almost in as-new condition. Not my personal choice but you can get a very good idea of what's about on Auto Trader website. DL

A mate of mine was blabbering on about the "maga" deal he got on a new beetle for his missus..


he paid a 4K deposit
pays nearly 2 K a year for the next three years
at the end the car isn't even his :eek: he has to pay another 4K ish if he wants it.

10K for three years driving..naaaahh.

What I would like to know is, where can you buy these cars that poeople give back to the leasing company, what happens to them?

Call me a tightwad, but I would never buy a new car.

What about a brand new Punto Multijet Diesel? You can get them from brokers for around £7.5k, and they do 63mpg. Seems pretty good to me.

Friend bought a new Type R, last year. 18k miles already complete waste cash imho

Depends what the car is. The Mrs Mini has lost maybe 3k in 2 years which is cheap. My previous car was an Accord R, paid 17k for it at just over a year old, they were 24k new so it had already lost 7k. It then lost another 6k by the time I sold it at 2.5 years old. I've recently bought an A3 3.2 for £23,500 inc 2k of toys, I'll be very surprised if it drops to £17k in a year, even if it does I've had the benfit of that new car smell :D

p.s. anyone who pays full list for anything other than a GT3 is a fanny, there's big money to be had off almost anything at the moment. New Clio 182 for £11,650 anyone?

When I was looking into buying a new car I looked at the price now and the value of cars with the same spec but 3 years old. This really put me off buying ne.
Was looking at Seat Leon Cupra but the value of a 3 year old one was shocking.

Rubbish, Leon Cupra's have one of the best depriciation ratings of any family hatch retaining 49% of they're retail price after 3 years which is exactly the same as a Golf Gti.....

We bought our Clio Si pre-registered from the dealer, paid £8200 instead of £11,200 (these were the days before car prices started to fall) and it had zero miles on it. Still lost £4000 over 5 years though. We told the dealer we'd seen one at a car supermarket and asked if they could beat the price.

A big advantage of a new car is you can get one exactly how you want it,re colour,leather,options etc.
I'd only buy one if i intended to keep it for at leat 6 years though.

In the end its only money.

Si, my honest advice is don't buy a Renault. The car's basically OK but will probably need loads of annoying minor work doing on it and the dealers are almost criminally incompetant and dishonest, IMHO.

Fiat it is ;) I liked the punto she had as a hire car, not sure what repair costs are like though

a good analogy (sp?) for buying a new car is

If you went to a charity shop and bought your clothes second hand you would get them loads cheaper

But you wouldnt unless you couldnt afford new .......

Fiat dealers have the worst reputation in the industry, and puto's lose loads of money quickly and frankly arent very good in the first place.

So whats car would YOU surgest. Id like 106 personally small cars + nippy. Not sure the final year of production though

My missus bought a 1.0 L Polo new 8 years ago for 7K. The car when chopped in was immaculate, no rust, dents etc etc. totally bog standard. She got 2.5k for it part ex against a new 1.2 Polo Match (std car but with alloys, metallic, CD, headrests and seat fabric) which was 9k. So she then took out one of VW's option plans for the other 6.5k over 3.5 years. She pays £120.00 month X 42 months = 5040.00. She can then chop it in for a newer model and VW gaurentee a buy back of £4000.00 or she can finance the rest of the money owed over however long she wants. I think the APR from VW was around 7.5%.

We too looked at a "one year old or ex-demo car" but VW only offer a 500.00 saving from buying new :eek: forcing you to think about a new car. I have to say though to get 2.5k for a 8 year old entry level Polo was doing really well. £562.50 a year depreciation was great. You could stick a 3 in front of that number for my scoob over the last 18 months :(
