Hunstanton/Cleethorpes - Must do's?

Taking the good lady to Hunstanton for a nice weekends break in a couple of weeks time, before driving on to Cleethorpes. Just wondered who had been, and what we should do?

Cheers

I will only offer one suggestion. When in Cleethorpes, go to Steels Cornerhouse Restaurant. Its in the Market Place, you can't miss it. Its a trad restaurant that's loved by all the locals, no need to dress up, what you are wearing will do. Anyway I digress, they serve the best Fish and Chips I and you will ever taste. Absolutely brilliant, its about £8 for the Jumbo Fish & Chips, bread & butter and a pot of tea. Whenever I go home, I ALWAYS go there for lunch.

Well, I was born in Cleethorpes.......................but someone has to be:D:

Depends what sort of things you like? And on the weather, which is notorious in that area. I once spent a day under fog and perishing cold in Skegness, and 5 miles up the road at Burgh le Marsh, they had had sunshine and shirtsleeves since 10.30!!!

Boston is a place best avoided.
The road from Boston to Skeg is AWFUL!!!
Skegness has a nice seafront, interesting shops and some amusements.
Sutton on Sea is tiny but not unattractive.
Mablethorpe has quite nice seaside type shops, and again, isn't unattractive.
Cleethorpes is a bit seedy, but the view across to Spurn point is nice.
Steel's Fish and Chip Restaurant (also called "the corner house") in Cleethorpes market place has queues out of the door most days in the season, which says it all, really. Sit doown and enjoy fish fresh from the docks, daily, and big enough to hang off a good sized plate!

If you don't fancy the trek along the coast, the route via Louth is good, but watch for speed cameras round the Louth bypass, and near Boston.
Louth centre is an interesting old market town with nice shops.

Mostly, it'll depend on the weather..........sea frets are a pain, but if the sun shines you'll love it.

BTW: the road from Skegness to Mablethorpe is, let's say, interesting!!

Reffro: you beat me to it, see above.

Are you a "Meggy" as well then?

I went to Bursar Infants, on Bursar Street and lived on North Sea Lane until we moved down the road to Scunny...........literally, down, too:(:

Skeggy to mablethorpe road is very interesting, can be a geat run if clear. Some of my best holidays were at Sandilands with my grandparents when i was a nipper. We used to own one of the chalets down from the golf course. Pitty they changed the beaches by raising the level with millions of tons of stone (although it now stops the high winter tides from destroying the chalets and local houses !!)
I can remember the year we had the swarm of ladybirds.

I haven't been there for years, used to go for work back in the early 90,s and can confirm that Steels is fantastic!

Grab a granny night on the pier is interesting!

Born in Meggies, Croft Baker maternity home. Lived for the first few years on Laceby Acres, moved abroad with my parents, Dad is ex-Conoco and went the Mid East/Far East for 7 years, back to UK to finish my schooling living in Caistor.

Oh and you missed the best driving road out in the area, Caistor High St, the B1225. Starting at the A46 junction at Caistor, and finishing 25 miles down the road at the A158 near Horncastle.

Ah, memories, spent my childhood holidays at the delights of Skeggy, Chaple St Leonards and Ingoldmels (sp)!!

A delight!

Oh aye, there's some good roads in the area, with few coppers too.

The one you recommended above? Last time I was on that I almost hit a deer. Brown trouser moment or what?

Trouble is, a lot of bikers know 'em too, and they tend to write themselves/their machines off on 'em regularly.

I found the best road in that area is the A18 Barton Street from the Oaklands Hotel heading towards Louth.

You can't miss the "Bag's Ball" every week at the Winter Gardens.

When in Cleethorpes you must have a ride on the choo choo train that runs alongside the beach, its only got rubber tyres but the ride is unforgettable.

ProperCharlie 19 March 2004 08:24 PM

where tf is cleethorpes? never fookin heard of it. as for hunstanton - i think you'll find watford gap services significantly more appealing.

:)

bluto22b 19 March 2004 09:33 PM

Look, stop being pretentious proper charlie. Most people on here could afford 3 months in Thailand topped off with a week in the Bahamas if they wished. If the guy wants to go British don't knock him. In fact, some holidays in Britain are actually more expensive than 2 weeks in Costa del ****e. Don't think you are above everyone just because you go to Majorca once a year. If more people visited Hunstanton there would be more money for investment. I know I am lucky living near to the place but that is not the point. Tourism keeps UK resorts buzzing.

bluto22 - you are obviously not familiar with id's brand of humour.

press this cold flannel against your forehead until you feel better.

ProperCharlie 19 March 2004 09:39 PM

btw i have never been to majorca, and probably never will. i spent most of my childhood holidays in norfolk - that's how i know what a sh*thole hunstanton is. personally, i consider myself fortunate that i don't live near the place.

:D

I bet the Fish & Chip shops there are Bling.

I went to "Just the Plaice" in Swanage. It was excellent. The batter on the Haddock was so light and crispy thus complimenting the light fluffy chip superbly.

Yummy.

Go to Hunny Beach with a bloomin' big kite and let the wind lift you off the ground.... or watch the guys in the surf doing likewise.... brilliant.

scoob_babe 22 March 2004 12:41 PM

Another thumbs up for Steels but haven't been back for a while now either.
Memories of trying not to run over the townies on the front in the summer ;)
I'm going all mist eyed ;):D
