SL500 vs. Scooby?

Was having the craic with my uncle that i'd piss all over his Merc in my Scooby (last time I saw him he had some big fat cruising type Merc), when he drops the bombshell he has an SL500 AMG, roadgoing F1 car thing

Can't find any gen on them. Anyone know the spec?

zakesm 18 March 2004 09:48 PM

you mean sl55 amg? the new shape one? will eat most STANDARD scoobys sorry. standard sl500 (no amg) could be different.

sulli 18 March 2004 09:53 PM

He said SL500 AMG I think. Anyway, definately AMG one, and he reckons it would piss on my scooby in absolutely any situation!
I must have a chance on the 'twisties', mustn't I?????????????????????????????????????????

papascooby 18 March 2004 09:54 PM

an sl55 will not eat a standard scooby by any means.

Performance (0-0-62.5 mph): 4.7 seconds
Maximum speed: 155 mph (electronically limited)

but it weighs more than 500kg more than the scooby :o

ie. if you have an sti you'll keep up in a straight line with him. A WRX even would probably roast him through the twisties

Which standard Sti does 0 - 100 in just over 10 seconds?

XT 18 March 2004 10:13 PM

papascooby, have even raced an SL55 AMG??

When is this STUPID MENTALITY GOING TO END???

FFS, don't just look on numbers, real life is way different than a sheet with stats and numbers. Communism and Socialism also look good on paper, but never worked in reality.....

I was in a supra with 450+ bhp and it was pretty equal with the Merc. I'm not talking about traffic light racing but racing in twists/turns/the lot.

You bought a scoob FFS, NOT Macca F1.....

Olly 18 March 2004 10:16 PM

Had both.

Merc is faster.

papascooby 18 March 2004 10:19 PM

any sl55 weighs 1955kg.

No, I've not raced one. I do not beleive that a rear wheel drive car of that weight would keep up with a 4 wheel drive car 550 kg lighter through the corners.

Surely it couldn't get much of it's power down at all?

I'm well aware of the car I bought and no-ones talking about F1 cars here.

<edit>

olly... really? :o

I'm stunned.

that AMG suspensions and TC must be very good indeed

So, the 4wd vivio is faster through corners than the Impreza???

There's a road car called McLAren F1.....but I suppose you don't believe that either.....

wtf is a vivio ? :)

sorry, misunderstood before, reread your post....

and yes i'm still aware my car isn't a maclaren f1, they don't have two cupholders.

back to the point, just read the bhp....ouch....it's need to be real twisty......and wet :)

The vivio is the cheapest way to own a Scoob

IF you care about cupholders, buy a MEgane Scenic ;)

493 too slow for you scoob owners???

soon in a 612bhp form, the CL range already is available with this engine...

Sulli, your uncle doesn't use the A46 Eastern relief road at all does he?

If he does then I was behind him a couple of weeks back just as cars in front of him moved out of the way moments before the Clifford Bridge roundabout heading towards Leicester M69.

He accelerated away towards the roundabout when most cars would have been in their braking zone.

Amazing sight to watching it lunge into the roundabout, it left my g'f's 280bhp for dead and I was as ready for it as I could have been.

I did actually break less into the roundabout as it's my favourite roundabout of all time and I really thought I'd take him there, but due to the fact it accelerated way too briskly for me into it initially, I was left just closing right up to his bumper and once we straightened up again to exit the roundabout he virtually disappeared once more.

It was an Asian guy, relatively youngish with his wife/gf/co-pilot sitting beside him. (I'm assuming Sulli is an Asian name here).

I saw her as I almost went around the back of them on the roundabout as the Impreza drifted sideways towards the embankment, I looked out my drivers window with my arms all bent and she was sitting reading I think. :D

If that is the car then he'll remember it as he flashed his hazards as I turned off for the M6.

m8 any scoob will leave a SL-anything around a track...

As for the AMG of the line then not a lot of hope... A SL500 AMG will do the ton in 10 seconds... Autocar figures... errr that's alot quicker than a scoob... there was a digitech chipped SL in the 0-100-0 test that dipped into the 9's...

Still just a Uber barge... a very qick one but still a Autobahn basher...even a 911 tb would stuggle to keep with one over 100mph and this was done in another autocar test... 100-150 the AMG was quicker!

CraigH 19 March 2004 10:32 AM

Wrong there.

Autocar did their Trackday Car of the Year. SL55 went round in the same time as a 575 Maranello, which was something like 4 secs a lap quicker than an STI at the time. 4 secs a lap........

Only through one hairpin was the Scoob faster, by something like 2mph, round all the rest the Merc destroyed it and on the straights it was a different league, matching a Murciellago for speed.

So, in all situations, an SL55 will totally trounce a std Scoob. They're embarrassingly good everywhere.

chiark 19 March 2004 10:39 AM

There's brand advocacy and then there's sheer stupidity ;) . I think Craig summed it up with "embarassingly good"... Plus they look stunning too.

I know what I'd take given the choice of pretty much any scoob - well, short of the WRC car ;)

JFB 20 March 2004 01:26 PM

I had the pleasure as a passenger in an SL55 AMG last weekend and it was quite an experience. I know a passeneger seat ride even in your own car can be an eye opener but this was mind blowing.

Cruise at 70/80 in utter luxury with a purposeful hum from the rear but then paddle shift to third and floor it and it's a Nascar bellow! I nearly stained the leather! The mid range acceleration was massive.

I would not rate my chances much against it on average roads in my STI8 PPP.

I seem to recall there is such a beast as an SL500 AMG which is nothing special-performance-wise (i.e. no AMG engine) but has some AMG bodykit bits and wheels. On paper one would expect most 280bhp standard Scoobies to beat one from 0-100.

The AMG SL55 is completely different and would whup most scoobies from 0-100mph.

There is no such car as an SL500 AMG. You can get an SL500 and add some AMG bits to it but that doesnt make it an AMG model.

Yep sorry m8.. i had the S500 AMG in my head; you know the long barge thing... still mega quick to the ton...

SL55 yep nice bit of kit... especialy if you hear it at full chat... dounds like an old WW2 bomber...

Good. That sorted that out then ;) (For some reason, I'm glad I clearly know nothing about Mercs :D )

I've owned a new shape SL500 and currently have an 03 PPP WRX. Straight line performance is pretty similar other than the fact that V8 Mercs shoot off the line in the dry whereas in your Scooby you will have to dial up 4k revs first.

The new computer suspension on the Merc (ABC) is outstanding. In the dry I was amazed how fast it could corner on the optional 18" wheels. My WRX - even with its Prodrive Springs - is not even in the same league.

Comparing the SL500 to the AMG SL500 is like comparing the Impreza Sport to the Impreza turbo and therfore under no circumstances should the two be confused.

dannytwo 20 March 2004 11:08 PM

NOT forgetting the price differance:D

JKJ2 20 March 2004 11:39 PM

You know, these threads about how Scoobys vs AMG/M3's etc are great food for thought. How, most likely, the drivers of said Uber barges arrive at that next set of lights, either slightly ahead/equal to/ or slightly behind, (if it's wet), wondering how their cripplingly expensive repayment motor has just failed to dent the reputation of a, ca £6000 legend, that just wont go away.
But, as was often said, the Scooby re wrote the rule book for affordable high performance..worth keeping in mind don't you think ?

ScoobyDoo555 20 March 2004 11:45 PM

hmm, agreed. How much is the Merc?

Quite expected to beat a "Rice Rocket"...............

No such model as SL500 AMG assume you mean SL55 AMG.

Think a lot of Sierra Cosworth owners would disagree with you there.

either slightly ahead/equal to/ or slightly behind
A 6k WRX will not even be on the same planet, performance wise, as an SL55.

60-100 sub 6 seconds.
100-186mph (when delimited) faster than a GT2 911 and Lambo Murciellago (Autocar test so maybe not 100% accurate)

has just failed to dent the reputation of a, ca £6000 legend, that just wont go away
lol, I doubt they'd even notice you were there

It will be more than slightly ahead, whether wet or not. I'd wager even a genuine 400hp Scoob would struggle 60-100, then above that it'd still be no contest.

billythekid 21 March 2004 12:39 PM

I am on track quite a lot and have had a proper play in a 55AMG - I have to say they are very good - but 80k price tag puts me off a bit LOL!

stevebt 21 March 2004 02:59 PM

a friend has one of those mercs;) his wife bought him it for christmas:eek: they are a superb car and even if a scoob could beat it, he'll be driving around in umodded natural luxury which would get most girls moist just looking at it;)

Like you have? Earlier threads have confirmed that an 'AMG SL500' is just an SL500 with an AMG bodykit and wheels. An SL500 is pretty similar in performance terms to a PPP WRX/standard Sti. An SL55 would toast either on the road if it was dry.
