ADSL performance tool
 

Our ADSL connection speed seems to be up and down like a whore's undergarments so I want to record the kbps of upstream/downstream over a few hours. Is there a tool that will let me do this? I know adslguide.org has a speed test which is ok for one-offs and mcafee's speedometer is ok for downstream. Something that will produce graphable data would be ideal.

Is it availability of the connection more than speed then mate?

You could something like WinMTR and leave it pinging a machine or router upstream from you.

Or grab the 60 day of eval of GFI Network Server Monitor. It's dead simple to configure and you could leave it checking Ping, SMTP and POP3 connectivity every few minutes to your ISPs mail server. It will even do a nice HTML summary page for you.

According to the router stats its been up and doing its thing for 181 days. One thing I have noticed recently is users are complaining more about speed, that DNS errors are cropping up (a refresh tends to sort that but some have no patience). Users connect through a proxy server so it could have something to do with that. However, I have tried a PC straight through the router with McAfee's speedo over a period of 10 mins and with the 150kB download got speeds as fast as high 400s kbps down to around 150kbps. I need to collect some evidence before I start kicking Demon's arse.

You do know its contended right ? i.e You're not guaranteed the full bandwidth all the time.

If you want to montior and alert on things like DNS repsonse time - have a look at Nagios - if you want to graph used bandwidth - look at Cacti (google will bring plenty of stuff on both)

It's the 20:1 business connection we have but users are still bleating about it not being as fast as used to be when the service was first installed :mad:
