Realistically on an unmodified UK card you shouldn't need a knock sensor. If you are going to start doing significant modifcation i.e. de-cat / remap then it's a good idea to fit one. On a Jap import it's essential.

It tells you it there is any detonation going on in your engine, usually due to the fuel air mixture becoming too lean at the top end and making everything hot. Severe detonation can destroy an engine in seconds.

I've bought one and must get round to fitting it. I haven't done any major modifications yet ;) but it eases concerns about the particularly flaky MAF sensor on the MY99/00 cars which is prone to a gradual failure leading to lean mixtures and det.
