Got this permanent sqeak from the front brakes after soom heavy braking !It only appears to go away if the brakes are cold.
Are my disks warped? Or should i uprate the system?
Help please cos i can now hear it over the stereo (well not quite but when you know its there you think you can hear it!!!!!)

Is a squeak or a squeal ?

The first sounds like most taxis braking and is due to vibration of metal shims (sp?) which hold the pad in place. It can be cured by removing the pads (believe me, this is easy) and applying a small amount of high temperature grease to the outside of the pad. I was told about this fix by a Subaru mechanic and it does work.

The second sound is more harsh and may mean metal to metal contact i.e. worn pads or worse.

well its more like metal to metal contact but the car has just had its 22.5k service and the dealer said it was a common thing when the brakes get hot!but i am not so sure

The pads have a small metal clip which is designed to press against the disc when the pads get low.

If the car is on the same pads since day one, I would check that there is sufficient material left.

Dealer should have spotted if they were low, but... mistakes do happen.

Pete,
Sounds like a brake-dust build up, first thing to do is take a wheel off and double check that the pads are O.K. if thay are proceed to take the pads out have a tin of brake cleaner and give everything a good clean then when replacing the pads use a small amount of cooper greese on the metal part of the pad that contacts the caliper and were the pistons touch the pad, bolt up, wheel on, jobs a good-un. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif
hope this helps rik.c
