getting it sideways too easily

went for a long blast today and managed to get it a bit sideways 3 times, nothing major, the car just went slidey and then I straightened it up fine. The roads were a little wet but I really didn't feel I was pushing it that hard. The car is a MY97 running on yokohama tyres. I've only had it a month so am not too sure about how it should behave.
I know it's hard to quantify how fast I was going but does this sound typical? Or do you think the tyres are the prob?

May I suggest taking it easy;)

Have you checked tyre pressure recently??

M8's had the same thing, one of the rears was on 19psi!!!

Roads are a bit greasy at the mo round here, (he says whilst doing 7K rpm in 2nd gear at 30mph ;) ).

Perhaps maybe the time to check your tread depth - also making sure your tyres aren't aincent (old tyres don't grip that well in the wet). Hard to say if it's the problem though.

Just bear in mind the scoob handles very much like a RWD car under hard acelaration, especially powering out of bends.

Always remember my yoko's not being so great in the rain.

yeah it was pretty much mid bend things just went skatey for a while, I really wasn't going that quickly though, I was giving it some welly, but not silly stuff.
Will check the tyre pressures, should have thought of that doh!
Don't know how old the tyres are cause they were on it when i bought it.

always remember putting mine sideways ;) was on a round about doing 30ish and showing off, decided to make an extra tug at the wheel to show the grip and BOOM, car is going side ways. thought it was going to go to 180 but ease of the accelerator and it sorted itself out:D was only embarassed as i was showing me mate how good the grip was:eek:

I had yokohamas on my Williams Clio. Great in the dry, gash in the wet. The rear would step out at low speed cornering in wet. Treat yourself to some new tyres!

I suggest wearing the Yoko's out asap and getting some F1 Eagles. Great roadholding especially in the wet and they give good mileage too.

MIne just did this on Sat morning and I found a rear tyre out of shape and worn almost at random. Only had it 2 months and I hit a speed limit pole. :X

Note: I had lift-off OS, not under power. How annoying is that (lift off at around 30)

With all the salt that has been put down recently the roads can be very deceptive, they might look wet but are really greasy, so beware.
But I used to have Yokahamas on a Golf GTI, couldnt wait to get them off, had them changed after a few thousand miles, didnt have any confidence in them at all on wet or greasy roads, braking was crap too and they felt so vague, no feedback. Wouldnt use them again, have F1's on my STI and they are the best tyre I ever tried.

i used to have yoko's on my mk 2 escort slight bit of damp and it was like driving on ice! good for steering with the right pedal though ;)

I had the same problem with Yoki A539's on a Corrado. Did my best to wear them out quick ;) OK in the dry, not too bad in the wet. Appauling in the damp, or as we have at the moment, grease. For a cheap tyre I've never had any problems with Fulda, currently running Hancook Ventus and they seem fine too. I'm yet to experience F1's and Toyo's, but will be trying one or the other on my new wheels (when I can afford them :( ).

Seems silly that we grit the roads to stop them being slippy between midnight and 8am on the odd few really cold days, and thus make them slippy as hell 24/7 for weeks until we get some serious rain to wash it away :rolleyes:

My car did it all the time, especially in the wet, now with **** falkens on it when pushed in the wet i feel like its bloody floating..... scary!

Use to have lots of sideways fun on my Avon ZZ 1's in the damp. Only problem was it came upon me all of a sudden...unexpected.
Got myself some Goodyear Eagle F1's. Best mod to the car to date. Staggering grip in the damp and wet...very hard to get it sideways now. A very fine tyre.
Running 16" at 30psi back and 34psi front.
