700 BHP Impreza engine

Just looking through Jap performance and saw the advert for turbosport.

They offer a 700BHP build with the following:

2650cc
fully ported heads
cams
stainless manifolds
8 injectors
forged pistons
steel rods
steel crank
twin throttlebodies
T4s turbo

And they say 900 can be achieved with NOS

Has anyone had this done? Just wondering as it sounds quite interesting (not gonna have it done just wondering)

fuz 14 March 2004 06:48 AM

engine costs $25000.00 us plus delivery

xs do a setup

Any mention of Electronics [ ECU ], FMIC, mapping etc? Can't see 700 bhp there without these bits !

David API Engines

PS Very dangerous to claim hp then not deliver, you might get you're backside sued !!

Heres the actual add

made a mistake on earlier post
should be 750bhp :D

DaveBlueRA 16 March 2004 12:59 PM

and what about gearboxs and diffs for that much power

jackieFMbrunei 17 March 2004 01:19 AM

same ol story m8s, use d calculator to get hp "figures", then search for bolt-ons + mods to get price+profit, then advertise 'em.
not that they ave actually built one already

scoobybabe1 17 March 2004 09:26 AM

If their are places where 750BHP is possible is their not somewhere in the UK where a more modist 400/500BHP is achievable at a relative low-ish cost?
I mean if we were talking cosworth then upgrade routes are far easier at sensible prices. ;)

Adam M 17 March 2004 11:35 AM

They may well have made it, but I haven't seen working examples.

As for 900bhp, sounds like nonsense to me. I don't recall ever seeing anyone achieveing these figures on the dyno, and I am also concerned that they advocate close decking for boost pressures of over 30psi. I would be amazed to see them get 750bhp from a 2.5 without using these pressures. I also didn't like the fact that the close decking was an option, suggesting it is a process which they carry out, rather than starting from scratch.

My experience already tells me that after market close decking is the wrong way to go.

And as for asking why suaru tuning isnt as cheap as cosworth tuning, the main answer is prodrive stifled the performance parts market, but cosworth didn't. Ford parts are generally cheaper and they have been going longer thus the cars have had more time to reduce in price. Plus there were far more cosworths in touring cars so there were more people tuning them increasing competition, that and the fact that the engine is stronger and needs less work to enable it to cope with the power. (only talking about the block here)

Trout 17 March 2004 10:17 PM

Is the Cosworth block stronger?

Talking to a builder with a long history in this area even the iron blocked Cossie needs to be relinered for over 500bhp otherwise the block is too weak.

Same with the Scoob engine.

The weakness in the Scoob is probably the bearings which are small. Although running high 500bhp in mine - with a fair bit of hard running - has been OK so far in mine - but who knows how long they will stand up.

Rigoli use hardened bearings as the standard type break down too quickly in their engines which are running up to over 1000bhp.

So where would the best place be to say drop off the car and have some work done that will strengthen the engine and uprate it to about 450bhp ish? (give or take a little) ;)

M0NEY 18 March 2004 08:55 AM

DJ Watts, few places over the UK. All depends how big your cheque book is :D

APIDavid, they wont tell anyone the full spec otherwise people will just look at their advert, and go and buy parts themselves. That is only a sample of the spec

As Rannoch said, Rigoli boys are producing big bhp so its not impossible. Just lots of work, lots of money and lots of rebuilds. lol

DJ WATTS 18 March 2004 10:35 AM

Or how much the bank could loan me... :D

So anywhere around the north west that could offer some performance upgrades to about 400BHP or so..? ;)

harvey 18 March 2004 11:16 AM

The first thing you need to do is decided what you want. The actual power figure you end up with is only a product of the modifications spec that you decide on and for most people it is a compromise because of financial implications. There is no problem achieving 400 or 450 bhp but it relys on getting the right spec and sticking to it. It goes without saying the work has to be done properly.
It is quite possible you could save money by doing some of the work yourself but when it comes to getting the specialist things done do not put a geographical restriction on your chosen tuner. Far better to travel the car and leave it for a few days to get the work done.

DJ WATTS 18 March 2004 12:18 PM

So what places do you recomend harvey in the UK?

I see that you have a supreme scooby and a good example of one that is tuned right. ;)
Anywhere where i could ring up and let them know what power figures im talking about and get some advice?

SPEN555 18 March 2004 12:26 PM

700BHP eh?

I must have one! WR1 320PS and 0-60 in 4.25secs, so this engine will do 2.1secs ;)

Much faster than a McClaren F1!

Gez 18 March 2004 01:06 PM

The power these guys are quoting is a bit optimistic but not impossible! Look at Rigoli Racing. Looking at their website though it seems that they can achieve 420hp from just puting on an induction kit, headers and a piggyback. Does this seem a bit too optimistic to you??

Kind regards

Gerry

US 2.5 Eng Block

If this is using a 2.5 US block as a base then you want to ask them what happens to the block when it goes wrong. The US 2.5 RS block has a big flaw!

hawkeye 18 March 2004 03:23 PM

Oh Oh i hope the 2.5 block that litchfields r using in the type 25 hasnt got these problems otherwise they will have a problem

Clive the Brave 18 March 2004 03:43 PM

try these people out for performance upgrade's.
quite hard on the pocket, but worth having a look.

http://www.carpages.co.uk/go.asp?ses...7591210%401944

Adam M 18 March 2004 06:26 PM

the 2.5 rs is an open deck block, the 2.5 in litchfields car is an ej257 which is a semi closed deck block.

Trout has made a good point that the bearing surfaces are small, and if I remember correctly andy f and pat worked out between them thatg the standard bearing film strength was theoretically insufficient for the standard power output.

Please don't think of rigolis cars as an example of what can be done as these cars run 4 bar of boost for 10 secs combined with 250bhp nitrous until it is rebuilt.

I dont think its a fair example of what can be reasonably expected.
