Don't think there's a right and a wrong pressure. Here's an extract from sidc...
4.3.5 Tyre Pressures Another popular topic for debate often revolves around tyre pressures. Drivers' experiences show that the Impreza is sensitive to minor differences in tyre pressures (you can easily feel a drop of 2psi), so it's worth checking them regularly. For the '96 model turbo, the recommended tyre pressures for the 205/55 VR 15 tyres are 33psi front, 32psi rear. Some dealers have suggested that these pressures are adhered to when fitting larger 16 and 17 inch wheels, however Prodrive suggest 33psi front / 30psi rear (up to 32psi on the rear for sustained high speed or heavy load) for all wheel sizes, while MRT suggested 35psi on both front and rear results in better grip and handling, at the slight expense of ride quality. Prodrive even suggest leaving the tyres at the pressures for trackday use, although increasing the pressure will stiffen the sidewalls somewhat. An owner in Milton Keynes (probably the highest roundabout density in the world!) reports that to combat excessive front tyre wear, Continental tyre engineers recommended that the MK police increase front pressures by 10-15%. The owner reports that while standard pressures wear the fronts in 8,000 miles, running at 36psi provides significant reduction in wear. |
I followed Autospeed's advice and went for 37psi front 32psi rear which gets rid of a lot of understeer and makes the car a little more tail happy (which was the opposite of what I would have expected on those settings), it feels a lot happier being chucked around roundabouts, which there are a lot of here in sunny Runcorn.
I'm running Goodyear GSD3 F1's on STi 16" 5 spoke rims on my MY93 WRX with lowered springs EDIT: oh, and the tyres have lasted over 18,000 miles of reasonably Scooby-like driving and have loads of tread left, except for a 1" band on the outside of the fronts which are remarkably slick-like ;) |
Dave, them pressures seem high, but clearly working for you. Im only running about 31psi alround.
Which air source in Runcorn do you trust ...??? Clearly when they designed our good ole hometown, they must have heard that Impreza's where coming..!!!!!! Ive just had my car 4 wheel aligned and it was well out (used a garage in Buckley - £40) , so hopefully i will start getting some decent tyre wear. I may try running slightly higher pressures. Im using Pirelli Pzero. Frank edited to add...... mines an my93wrx on 205/50/16 |
Frank, I use my mates air compressor and a digital gauge ;)

I dont want to disagree, but I am fairly confident that 37psi in the front will generally be disapproved of. If you want a car that oversteers try 32f 32r. Make sure you set these when they are STONE cold - scoobys warm up real fast. I really feel 37 is way too much. Just my thoughts :)
