Clutch peddle sticking??

Sometimes when changing gear quickly and depressing the clutch I suppose harshly, the peddle will 'stick' down. I just then flick it back up with my foot and all is fine. Has some part of the peddle mechanism become worn?

normally caused by missing "return spring" on the clutch mechanism under the intercooler.......................

This is quite a puzzler, as I haven't found a real cure for it yet. Even I.M couldn't help us at main dealers.
It apparantly started back in the days with the Legacy Turbo's, they couldn't fix them then either.
New return springs have been fitted, along with master and slave cylinders, and eventually clutches. You could start by making sure that they pedal is adjusted properly to have the correct free-play, if that is all ok then possibly look towards a new A.P or Helix type clutch with a stronger diaphragm.

I recently made another post with a similar problem. I was in the mountains this past weekend, and my clutch pedal got continously lower and lower, to the point where I had to pull it back up. It's back to normal now...

If the spring is under the hood, I wonder if it is getting warm and losing some of its tension temporarily??

Weird.

I had similar problem was fixed when i replaced the clutch. I think this is where the real problem lies.
Hope this view helps.

Had the same on my stiv3 after a clutch change. i think it is the thrust bearing sleeve picking up sometimes on the outside diameter of the input shaft spigot cast into the gearbox front case. God, that sounds crazy when you read it! It hasn't happened now for ages.

Adjusting the clutch pedal free play to approx. 10mm, cured my pedal with the same symptons as yours.

639: Where is the adjuster? Under the dash in the pedal box?? My pedal has much more than 10mm free play....

Its under the dash, where the clutch pedal pivots. Theres a stud which goes through the pedal bracket with a locknut at either side. loosen the locknuts and screw the stud further down towards the floor until it reduces your
free-play, tighten your locknuts then recheck. Book says it should be 5mm to 15mm.

Thanks! After the 'sticking' episode I want to be sure I've done all I can to cure it.

Am I glad to see this thread...!

Had my first experience of this last night. Pulled out to overtake lorry on B road, changed down into 3rd and floored it only to see revs go through the roof and no increase in speed, changed down to 2nd and same happened again, pumped the clutch few times and all was well again but was convinced for few seconds that clutch had let go. Had that awful vision of money being flushed down the toilet for about 5 seconds.
Have never really had any clutch probs before apart from very occationally when in heavy (first n neutral) traffic have noticed the pedal going spongey and light towards the top of the travel.

FYI....2001 P1, original clutch, 55k
