Hi,

I was wondering if anybody can help with this little problem i have!!!!
(i await the crued comments!)

i have an 1998 sti 4 type r and have noticed that in wet weather the rear end steps out when i go over a drain or manhole cover etc.

i was told that the rear suspension was probably worn and causing this to happen, but after changing the rear struts the car still does it!

The car has been 4 wheel laser aligned and it was done fine, so i can't really think what it could be. Should i start worrying now, or is this a common fault that is easily sorted? Any help or suggestions would go down a treat.

try some new tyres

i thought it was the tyres when i first noticed it but it still did it even with new ones on, also the diff control is always on green.

What breed of tyres are you on though.....

mmmmn I would perhaps nip & see a scooby specialist.. the subaru drivetrain & suspension has many components which could cause undesired handling, best leave to the experts imo

I have two sets of wheels and i've tried them both, one set has michelin pilot sports and the other had toyo proxes and continental contact sports or something. Didn't seem to make much difference (if any) at all though, and none of them are really that cheap...

does your type R have a DCCD centre diff (adjustable)?

Yes, my car does have the adjustable diff control.

where the diff controller is set will have a big influence on how the car drives. with the diff in the fulley open position it's 65/35 Rear/front torque distribution. I can't advise where to put it, but do some searches for DCCD posts by John Felstead

...or use a little less throttle? Man hole covers in the wet are pretty much zero grip like ice so I don't think it matters what you have, there is no grip to be offered so.....

type r behves more like a rear wheel drive car. going from the normal sti to type r takes a bit of getting used to.

dont think there should be any probs with set up, more of getting used to the car and deffo a set of grippy tyresif u have a heavy foot.

happened to me b4 but after learning more abt the type r it was faster on track thn my old sti.

It doesn't do it just when i'm gunning it around corners, it also does it when i'm pottering around. Its ok if i'm going dead straight, but as soon as the wheels are turned...... out it goes, and as i said this can happen at only 30mph or so. its only for a slip second whilst on the drain, but its still quite scary and more when going faster.

One other thing that i forgot to add, the tyre wear on the back is sh!t, i know toyo's aren't that great and Type R's handle differently, but according to the records and receipts i have, the fronts have done near on 18k and the backs are shot after only 6k!!!!!!! Is that nornal????

Actually when the diff is in 'OPEN' mode, as in all the way back then this is 80% rear and only 20% to the front!!
If you switch it to the next green setting which should be 1 up from the open setting this will then be 64% rear and 36% front, which is basically the same as any other impreza

Yep, that doesnt sound right at all, my V4 is very impressive in the wet, on good Michelin Pilots...

Does anybody know where i can get this done?

I live in dorset and would rather not travel 200miles if i can help it....

The only place i can think off is power engineering but if there is someplace better or closer it wold be good.

if you go to Powerstation in Cheltenham you can have the bumpsteer mod done at the same time.

There's a good place in Christchurch that Chappelgate used to use, but I cant think if the name. Ron might know???

Yep, they have a 4WD laser alignment jig etc. I would try and find the Prodrive geometry settings while youre at it. Do a search, or stick a post in handling or gen technical.

Also stick a post in Southern, to see if anyone knows the name of the place.

What colour is yours? Im in Wimborne and have a black V4 STi.

I have had exactly the same problem on my P1, it even did it going over cats eyes on a bend! The dealer has changed the rear struts twice but problem was still there. I changed the tyres from well worn P-Zeros to Toyos and it was better but not perfect. So I had the geometry done to Prodrive tarmac settings and it handles like a dream now. If it is really wet and I hit a manhole I can still feel it twitch but my Yaris does it as well so I suspect most cars will.

Possibly down to TFQ, car control comes in handy !

Just phoned chapelgate Porche (old scooby dealer) and they used a company called Christchurch tyre Co.

Has to be the one mentioned above, cheers.

P.S. They are pretty busy but managed to Book her in so all should be good in a couple of weeks, i'll add a thread letting you know how it goes.
