I read that the P1 had to accelerate between 2 points in a certain gear in a set time to be classed as a supercar.
Does anyone know this time/distance etc, & who sets this criteria ?

Ro,

I think thats a bit misleading. There arent any 'official criteria' for what makes something a supercar....a number of people have their own thoughts on it..such as..

1) must be mid engined
2) must have 8,10 or 12 cylinders
3) must meet certain performance criteria
4) must look like someone has sat on it http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif
5) etc etc etc

no-one really agrees.....Im guessing for the P1 it was probably 50 - 70 in 3rd? seems to be a favourite with some....

cheers

There is an official EU definition (there is an EU definition for everything http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif )

I don't know what the definition is, but if you are classed as a supercar your exhaust is allowed to be 1db louder, as in the P1

...so don't pay any attention to EVOs Knowledge (or lack of) this month where it calls a MX5 and an MGF a 'Supercar'!
What have they done to that section, very odd.

JoeyDeacon 15 June 2000 03:20 PM

No I think you will find that with the MX5 and MGF it relates more to the blonde bimbo/hairdresser owners perception of the car's performance rather than what it can really do.

I had some guy in an MGF tailgating me so I slowed down to 25 MPH in second for about 10 seconds and then just booted it!! :-)

Joey,

Does that kind of behaviour on the road make you feel superior ?? Sure works for me !!

subverbal,

Very childish.

Had a motorbike next to me today with a Ford Cougar behind it at a set of lights. Judging from their approach to the lights a bit of a race would be on when the lights changed.

Knowing how fast bikes are I moved off very slowly not wishing to embaris myself. The bike moved slowly too for a bit and then screamed it. I didnt bother doing anything knowing that a Scooby is good but aint a bike.

The guy in the Cougar then decided that he would hammer it. By this stage, the bike was a good distance away, so I didnt appear to be chacing him when I also floored it leaving the Cougar behind accelerating lamely.

All very childish but frankly its part of the reason Ive got a Scoob.

I have never been able to take Cougars very seriously ever since I saw Driven where a vauxhall Vectra 1.8 beat it by miles in a 0-60 test !!
Wasn't the V6 Cougar, but how embarrassing !!

As far as I know supercar status allows the driveby noise test to be done only in 3rd gear. Accel from 30 mph. Normally has to be under 74 dB in 2nd & 3rd gear for 'normal' cars. I'll check with the lads doing Jag XKR systems http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif - ahhhh georgeous car !

0-100mph in less than 10 seconds is a good one.

If you dribble when you see it, thats a dead giveaway.

Or I suppose tights, a cape and x-ray vision is another clue.

dholmes 19 June 2000 01:25 PM

Prodrive are quoted as saying the P1 passed the supercar acceleration test. I too have asked this question: "What is this test?"

As for the Cougar, my 'ld man has the 2.5 V6 and it is soooo slooow. He agrees and reckons my wife's Laguna is almost as quick and that's only the 1.8 RT. The Cougar must be a bloody heavy car.
