classic keyfob mod - a must for all enthusiasts?

This is the second keyfob that has broken on me now, so both fobs that came with the car are knackered.

I've managed to punch a hole through the plastic to enable it to be secured onto my keyring, but the fob is now held together with sellotape and luck.

I heard the Subaru charge 1 arm + leg for a replacement - has anyone found a replacement case from else where that the bits can be bolted into, or approached the alarm manufacturer directly to get a price? When I come to sell the car, it'll look stupid offering a perspective purchaser a broken keyfob....

The keyfob looks exactly like a Sigma which are programable. I think they are about £40

Got mine for £34.94 inc. VAT from main dealer but this was back in July 2002
(MY99)

I asked at my main dealer as my button rubber is starting to die they said £18 for a new one fob. They probably charge a load more to program it - but its an easy job to do urself!

The price I paid included reprogramming the alarm system, the new fob and the existing fob. I probably could have done it myself but for the sake of a few quid...

The are indeed about £40 and are programable to your car by means of the keypad in the glove box. I have two spare ones of these as I bought two for my Uk 99 that only came with one old scuffed up fob, when I sold the car I deprogramed them from the car and kept them as spare ones for the P1 I then bought which is now sold. They are virtually as new, £20 each anybody?? Dont worry if you do not know your pin as I have a master pin to reset a forgotton pin (system needs to be unarmed though). I live in kent.

Thankfully I've not had to resort to using sticky-tape yet :)

Both mine looked like that too !"

I went into local Scoob garage and requested a price for key FOB when my broke -- £30 then told to programme it would be another £30 needles to say I super glued a piece on the back to get a ring through and wrapped some tape round. OK looks shi*e but still works

For my Impreza I'm just a poor key user :D

However, I've just bought a remote for my little 96 civic - from Honda a mere £83.25 - they said they didnt charge £12+ for the programming. Bloody rip off merchants the lot of em!!

As said above it's a Sigma alarm.

A couple of local alarm fitters to me install them into privately owned Subaru's as though they were factory fitted.

Try asking an alarm installer near to you and not a main dealer, thus preventing the Dick Turpin scenario.

Don't put so many keys on your car fob - you'll only scratch your doors. Furthermore, if it has any keys on for your backup security measures then they will be rendered useless if your keys are stolen.
