Power Steering Leak

My power steering pump seems to have developed a leak and emptied it's contents over the engine. The leak seems to be coming from underneath the pump not the hoses. The pump seems to be in two pieces and i am wondering if there could be a leak between the two halves? Has anyone seen this problem before? Roughly how much would i be looking at for a new unit?
This is on a MY95 WRX.

Hello

I have the same problem, though not as bad. I took my 95 WRX back to where I bought it from last wednesday and was told that between the two halfs there is a rubber o-ring seal that is prone to perishing form the power steering fluid over time. To replace the seal costs the small sum of approximately 10p ! But it must be a genuine subaru part as the seal has square sides and they are apparentely hard to find !

I hope this solves your problem,

John

Thanks Akka,
Any idea how difficult it is to change the seal yourself?

Apparently it's really easy, just a case of un-doing the three bolts that hold the upper case of the power steering on and then you are able to take the seal out. ou will obviously lose power steering fluid though, so be prepared. You may also get an air lock too?

This appears to be the seal between the resevoir and the pump, i believe the leak is coming from the bottom of the pump?

Jolly Green Monster 10 March 2004 05:00 PM

It will probably look like the bottom of the pump when the seal between res and pump goes..

Mine did..

Also possible to be the front seal on the spindle but more likely the res seal.

thanks guys, will investigate further tonight, if it is this seal can you change it without removing the pump body?

You need to buy the small seal for the dealers (about 75p) and then remove the resivoir and replace the seal on the nozzle that goes into the pump.

resurrected from the dead. Been away for a while, mysteriously the leak hasn't fixed itself, I have replaced the o-ring on the resevoir nozzle but still leaks, any last ideas before I send it to the garage?

i had a similar prob on my Prelude VTEC - Honda wanted £1600 for a new steering rack.

I phoned a power steering specialist in Bristol I think it was who did a recondition for £250
