ECU Fitting
 

Hi folks,

Just obtained a Prodrive ECU for my MY01. Never having seen one before, it comprises a PCB and a connector - is that it?

Being a bit of a plonker when it comes to things mechanical/electrical is it easy to fit? Should I hand it over to my main dealer?? Or are there any specialists local to Northampton that would do a better job?

Oh, also are there any other modifications that have to be made as there always seems to be something that has to be done in order to achieve what you set out to!!!

I already have the Prodrive centre section and backbox if that's of any consequence.

In theory, you shouldn't have to do anything other than swap 'em over - as long as you've got the right Prodrive ECU for your MY...

Judge, it sounds like he's just got the internals for the ECU, rather than the whole unit. Can you post a pic?

I might be wrong but swapping ECU's on the MY01 / 02 means a visit to the dealer to have the keys / immobiliser sorted. Something to do with the new ECU not recognising them :(

Yes I understand that this will defintely need to be done on a MY01 onwards.

You need someone with a select monitor - dealer or TSL or similar specialist that has the kit.

As I understand it you need to sync the immobilser and the ECU otherwise it will fail to start the car as the fule pump will not start up - I have the same quandry but I cannot firmly establish what MY this is from. I have MY98, and AFAIK this has transponder keys (well it cost me £350 for a new immobilser and keys (£36 each) when it failed) but I don't know whether I will need the reset or not - I have another thread runnign to try and find an answer.

Scratch, sorry to hear about the cost incurred fitting a new ECU! I hope to avoid such problems as this ECU was sold to me on the basis it came off a MY01 UK 300. I was hoping it was a piggyback ECU that I could plug in....looks like it isn't and I also may only have part of it. Anyway I'll wait and see what Judge's piccy looks like before I talk to the seller!!

I'm on shaky ground here but as far as I know the ECU swap problem occured when Subaru changed from the JECS ECU to the Denso ECU with the MY01 (bugeye).

I was going to sell / swap my TeK2 ECU with someone for a "clean" ECU ready for a re-map and was told it was a pretty easy and quick thing for a dealer to sort out the keys etc and not expensive :)

I guess dealers must sort out a lot of people who have lost their keys :D :D

Sounds like you have the "piggyback" GEMS 44 board that dealers wire into the factory ECU as part of the PPP on the bugeye. If so, you don't need to worry about the immobiliser/key reset. This only applies when you change the complete ECU (ie the complete metal case with the wiring loom plugholes in it).
All you need to do is take your own ECU out of yer motor and wire this board in, fit your 'zorst AND (you know those extra little parts of the job you were asking about) you'll have to fit a resized restrictor (or the performance will be fairly poor) and you'll be off!
The resized restrictor is important and usually overlooked. The PPP will work, but really not very well without this.
Would also recommend you swap your hoses for Samco (unless you can lay your hands on the Prodrive rubber one).

That's what I really needed (and was hoping) to hear! The ECU was part of the PPP fitted to this guy's MY01 UK 300.

I haven't got any wiring diagram and, to be honest, one probably wouldn't make much sense to an electrophobe like me!

However, I haven't got the resized restrictor...I s'pose you're gonna tell me they are impossible to get hold of and cost a bomb??

PS the zorst has been on 18 months. Have you got a PPP?

Yeah, got a PPP on my Scoob and have fitted two to friends cars. Doesn't take long to do. 20 mins with the old soldering iron and the ECU board is in.

Restrictor takes half that. Getting the hoses and 'zorst on takes the longest.

And on the subject of restrictors, I had hellish trouble trying to get them through the dealer network and via posts here so don't try.
Instead, give Knowlesy at Xtreme Scoobies (www.xtremescoobies.co.uk) a shout - a very nice man indeed - and he'll pop one in the post to you for about £5!

I've e-mailed Knowlesy and hopefully they will be able to help.

My main dealer should know what they are doing with the ECU and hopefully they will also know where the restrictor goes!!

I'll ask them for a quote and also see if they appear knowledgeable, if not I'll take you up on the offer of the wiring diagram.
