idleing problems

Hi all,
After coming off the motor way today,I was sat in traffic and the revs started to drop as though the car was going to stall(it didn't stall)as I pulled off it was a bit sluggish.Could it be the plugs as its due for a service or the air filter its a HKS it was on the car when I brought it about 14 months ago how long are they good for already changed the air flow meter.Or could it be a fueling problem,or the throttle body sticking, need some advice before the service so I don't get a load of technical jargen thrown at me saying that this and that needs replacing. Thanks for yor time also forgot to add its had a new battery so don't know if its the ECU??

You've changed the flow meter recently and left the induction kit on. From what I have read on here and experienced myself it sounds like you need another flow meter (MAF). Changing the battery will have highlighted this. I also presume the car is a MY99/00. If it is then I'm quite sure this could be your problem. Also I would advise you to put the standard induction system back on to prevent it damaging the MAF again.

MAF and/or Lambda sensor - check your CEL NOW!!! I've had this before - the idle is fine on first start up but gets rough when warmed up.

MAF approx £70+vat
Lambda approx £120+vat

It will no doubt be the MAF, and the HKS cone probably killed it.

The car is MY93 how do you check the Lambda sensor? The last time I changed the MAF I didn't have these symptoms though.

Messiah did you pay £70+vat for yours and if so where from.I belive you can by the bit thats inside the meter is this the part thats £70+vat?????I know the hole unit is a lot more(that is if I haven't got my wires crossed)Any one got one

Dark Blue Mark 04 March 2004 11:28 PM

You cant just buy the element on MY93, so expect to pay a fair bit more unfortunately.

The cars behaviour will be pretty much the same with a MAF or 02 fault.

You can check it by using a Select Monitor, or using an AFR gauge.

Are TSL in Notts? Go to them.

£300 IIRC for a MAF of that year as it includes all the plastic tubing around it :(

Easy to fit but a bit tricky (mustn't drop any thing down to pipe)The part is the gasket between the inter cooler and the pipe that feeds it PART no 21896 If you buy this part take lots of care doing it..
Try this and see if it works I got the heads from a mate who changed it and says it works but it was the last thing he changed and cost his a packet hope this works for you and you save a bit.
Let us know if it sorts your problem..

I have noticed now that fuel consumption is really high, is it still the gasket or now more towards MAF sensor?

richie rich 17 April 2005 02:16 AM

whats all this sh@t 300 for a maf, wake up and smell the daylight man, a maf is 85 notes, + fitting , dont care what year you say its for, UNLESS you wanna pay me 300 for it...

Dark Blue Mark 17 April 2005 09:57 AM

Careful about who you say is talking ****! :) £85 is for MY99/00 earlier cars are much more pricey....

You cant replace the sensor alone, have to get the housing as a complete unit.

My mate who changed the gasket said that his fuel consumption was poor before he changed it now it seems to have improved after replacing the gasket,he also experienced loss of power, lost boost and sometimes putting out black smoke.
Hope this helps.

High fuel consumption indicates a F*cked up lambda.
Try to disable the lamba and see if it's idles better, if so buy a new one if not have your maf checked with the select monitor

Did you replace the MAF after the problem started or before ?
Check for ECU fault codes and note anything that comes up.
You could either do an ecu reset then, and see if any fault codes come back now, or fit a replacement MAF ( 2nd hand jobby from breakers should be ok for a bit, or to test anyway) and then do an ecu reset.
Run the car, see if fault re-appears.

MAF

Guys,
Just been down the local Scooby mechanic and he ran a diagnostic on mine and it came up MAF as the problem. My idle is all over the place when it is warm and I have just noticed at 2.5 thou revs it feels a bit lumpy ! Any Idea where I can get a sti 4 MAF for a good price, dont mind if it is second hand, just need a working one ? I was quoted £180 + vat for a new one from Grade A ?

Dark Blue Mark 18 April 2005 12:51 PM

Try Town End Garage - thats expensive for a 2nd hand

Can be a waste of time IMO, as they can't guarantee it works or wont get bashed in transit.... (sensitive to vibration) just get a new one and be done with it.

Try unplugging the MAF and see what it does.

If it is a sti 4 MAF I would defo be interested, as I really don't want to spend over £200 for it. I am planning on selling my car in the next month or two anyway, so it would be wasted money ? I keep seeing people selling them for between £35 and £80, but they are UK cars. I think each model and even each year has a different MAF !!!!! Bar stewards !!!!

Foot_Tapper 20 April 2005 02:12 PM

If you are intersted, i'll let it go for £75 inc p&p

Dark Blue Mark 20 April 2005 02:27 PM

I can confirm it works too!
