Were you a punk

Ahhh the late 70's early 80's. Just been listening to Stiff little fingers on my local radio station, a blast from the past,
What was your favourite punk group

tiggers 29 February 2004 05:27 PM

Now your talking!

Loved early Stranglers, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Southern Death Cult and of course The Buzzcocks.

We need a dose of punk now to get rid of this insipid manufactured garbage that keeps being thrown at us over and over again. Can you imagine Johnny Rotten's and Sid Vicious' reaction to the likes of Ggggggareth Gggggates - now that would be worth seeing :D

tiggers.

douglasb 29 February 2004 05:48 PM

Don't know that these count as punks, but the Stranglers were the terrier's tackle. I'm with John Peel on the Undertones "Teenage Kicks" possibly being the best single of all time.

Doug

Poor Guy 29 February 2004 05:50 PM

unclebuck 29 February 2004 10:26 PM

Nobody else then? Never mind. I've given the UB fan club plenty of ammunition to slag me off, so where are you? :D

BTW I'm the one wearing the guitar with his back to the camera. A drummer wearing a guitar - with his back to the camera?!? Now *that's* subversion.

Tim66 STi8 29 February 2004 11:29 PM

Crass good group :)
Looks like I'll have to dig out my old albums & listen to stations & Nagasaki nightmare,
The kids will love it :D

Tentenths 29 February 2004 11:42 PM

This takes me back to pogoing (spelling?) in the 6th form common room, to music from, I think, a Ferguson Studio 6 music centre (how the hell did I remember that?).

In addition to those names already mentioned what about

The Ramones
Angelic Upstarts (made the Pistols seem quite tame I seem to recall)
Boomtown Rats
Undertones
Tom Robinson Band (not convinced they were "true" punk)
Nipple Erectors (can't remember what they did - except appear on my Geography folder doodlings!)

Any others?

unclebuck 29 February 2004 11:47 PM

Any others
The Damned? The Buzzcocks! :D The Adverts, and Jonny Moped?

UB:D

Tentenths 29 February 2004 11:48 PM

Nipple Erectors + lateral thought = The Vibrators ;)

Punishment of Luxury

What a fine name.

It makes Coldplay or The Stereophonics sounds so sh1t.

Kevin Groat 01 March 2004 07:31 AM

Long time fan of the Damned, saw them again in Aberdeen last year - still a brilliant live act

STi-Frenchie 01 March 2004 08:17 AM

Surprised no-one has mentioned The Clash yet...

Anyway, TenTenths, that song is by The Undertones IIRC

What about this lot then?

Crass
Suburban Studs
Blitz
The Lurkers
Eater
The Ruts
999
Raped
Slaughter and the Dogs
The Exploited
early Adam and the Ants before he went all funny...
Menace
V2 (Manchester's unsung heroes)

ahh, the memories.

Gareth Gates? What have GG and Harold Shipman got in common? Neither of them can finish a sentence. :)

zoog 01 March 2004 08:21 AM

Feargal Sharkey bought some cushion's from my wife's shop last Friday!

I suppose we all grow up sometime....I remember vowing to my schoool mates that I d never stop being a punk, however old i got :)

Sex Pistols - still have the ability to send a shiver down your spine evertime I hear the opening riff of Pretty Vacant or Anarchy. Rotten was a mesmeric frontman.

Remember going to 3 Stranglers gigs, totally obsessed with them at the time, also 1 P.I.L. (1985, Brixton academy) and Siouxsie - she had a very short mini on and no knickers just fishnets, i could see cos I was right at the front barrier. Very exciting for a 15 year old I can tell you ;)

Scoobychick 01 March 2004 08:35 AM

I made a pathetic attempt at being a punk, I played X-Ray Specs "Germ Free Adolescents" constantly at full volume out of my open bedroom window to impress the neighbours  I wore razor blade earings, a safety pin chain, a ripped waistcoat from one of my dads old suits, drainpipe jeans and stilletos and crimped my hair into a spikey mess then went to the under eighteens disco in the local town hall :D :D :D I was about 15 at the time and thought I was really cool

Furball Sharky

I think !!!!!!!!!

My off spring call this stuff old fogie music, seeing as they are being brought up on a diet of manufactured boy & girl band pop stuff.

What every happened to bands starting off in garages etc without the help of Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman etc

brickboy 01 March 2004 09:51 AM

UncleBuck -- then I've seen you at the Welly Club, Hull, about 1979 .... can't remember if Crisis were headlining or doubling up with Poison Girls ... ah, happy days when all you needed was a gig at the Welly and a couple of pints of mild :D:D:D

I remember the single with the chorus "Riga ... Treblinka ... Dachau ..." very well indeed from Peel and punk dos ... :D

tiggers 01 March 2004 10:13 AM

Jeez,

This is bringing it all back!

Ok how about:

Pere Ubu
The Dead Kennedys
Barmy Army
The Four Skins (more Oi than punk, but the line is a blurred one)
Chelsea
The Skids (early stuff before they went all electro)

or how about early Joy Division (not true punk, but wouldn't have existed without it)

tiggers.

GaryK 01 March 2004 10:37 AM

wow some great memories, yeah I've got some early ants stuff, young parisians, car trouble, xerox really cool stuff before it becomes bland and commercial (although Kings OTWF is a superb album).

Used to love (and still do) buzzcocks sham69, the members.

What I am listening to at the mo which is pretty punky but you would never know is very early Gary Numan/Tubeway army not a synth in sight!

Gary

unclebuck 01 March 2004 10:56 AM

I've got some early ants stuff,
We supported them once along with Misty In Roots.:D The whole gig ended in a riot and the venue was completely trashed. I remember going into the toilets and *every* appliance had been smashed, water spurting everywhere. Outside was a full on pitch battle, bottles, bricks etc between the punks and rastas on one hand and NF skins on the other and the Fire Brigade and coppers caught in the middle.

LOL, as you say, some great memories.

UB;)
