Appeal 6 - Stolen Mountain Bikes

On the night of Sunday 30th November/Monday 1st December 2003, 213 high spec mountain bikes were stolen from a warehouse on the Willow Lane Industrial Estate, Mitcham, Surrey. The total value was around £250,000 (each one worth about £2,000). There were 7 different models stolen. They were all made by the company Specialized.

The thieves stole a Terence Conran lorry from the Conran Shop Limited, Merton Park Estate, London SW19 earlier that day. They used this to transport the bikes. There are only four such vans in the country. The van was found abandoned later on the Monday in Purley, Croydon.

On Thursday night/Friday morning 5th/6th February there was a further theft of bikes from the same industrial estate. The bikes were not as high spec. 88 bikes worth around £400 each were stolen. The two thefts may or may not be linked. The gut feeling of the police and the company is that they probably are.

All the bikes from both thefts were stolen in boxes, flat packed. They are relatively easy to assemble so they look OK, but it is a skilled job to assemble them so they work properly. They may be being sold at markets etc in boxes or assembled. It’s unlikely they’ll be bought by dealers because most of the specialized dealers are recognised bike shops.

The bikes all have frame numbers on the chassis and there is a list available of the numbers of all the stolen bikes. If anybody is unsure or wants more information they can contact Specialized Direct on 020 8391 3500, or email sales@specializeduk.com. There is an £8,000 reward.

The most unusual of the seven models are:
The Stumpjumper expert FSR - worth £1,800. 92 were stolen.
The Stumpjumper Pro - worth £1,900. 11 stolen.
The Stumpjumper Blue - worth £1,200. 5 stolen.
The Hardrock Pro - worth £500. 21 stolen.
