Which Turbo do I have??

Does anybody know how i can find out exactly what Turbo is on my MY95 WRX Wagon (jap import). I have heard several different opinions as to whether it is a TD04 or a TD05 and i want to find out for sure for my tuning plans. Hard evidence only please. I have tried looking on IWOC and SIDC but have found nothing definative. Is there anyway to tell by looking at the turbo?
thanks
Benno

The only definate way of checking is to examine it physically. After all, it may have been changed in the land of the rising sun.

It should be a TD04

Any ideas how to tell the difference physically??

As Jlanng has already said it should have a TD04 standard but may have been 'fettled' with by our friends across the water before it graced our shores. ;)

The turbo should have a 90DEG entry, on the compressor cover there may be some numbers identifying it. The 04 is physically smaller than an 05 but they both can have the 90DEG entry. Look to see if there is any numbers/letters on the compressor cover. :D

Thanx Dellboy
Will check, I am assuming I will nead to remove the heatshield to see.
It's a small thing that has been bugging me for a while now.

You need an experienced pair of eyes on it (rules me out). Alternatively, you might want to take a photo and post it here, but you probably won't be able to tell.
This isn't a definative test, but when does your turbo 'kick in'?

The only picture I could find was here. At least you'll know what you're looking for, and where to look for it... :)

Thanks for all the help guys, think I know where to look now, not sure if I will be able see it with all the pipes connected (just popped out to have a look before, work colleagues think I am mad) but i might investigate further at the weekend.
BTW turbo starts to spool around 2500rpm kicks in about 3500rpm. :D:D:D

Nick your missus' make-up mirror out of her handbag when she isn't looking. Add a torch. Season to taste

Hmmm torch in car + female worker accross the room = zero work productivity this afternoon.

The_Judge 26 February 2004 04:26 PM

What's this "work productivity" then...? You might want to explain it to Dark Blue Mark as well...! :D Oh, and Horace of course ;)

Benno 26 February 2004 04:36 PM

I read about it on the net somewhere, think it was an article on Sweden, don't think it'll catch on here personally

Work, let alone productive work, sends a shudder right through me... :p
