Weird Vibration sounds @ 4000 rpm

Has anybody got any ideas? Have phoned Subaru today going in Wed....
When I get to 4000rpm I have noticed that there is a very loud vibration (like) sound coming from the engine. The Strange thing about it though when you get to 4500rpm it disappears?
This also is happening when deceleration from high revs, 5000-rpm ok 4500 ok 4250 - vibration sound 3900 ok?

Any views welcome?

Car is low miles, & not been thrashed.

Cheers

Sounds like an exhaust heat shield.. Subaru will charge you loads for a new one and possibly a new exhaust part as they usually cannot get the heat shields separate..

If they confirm the heatshield you could take it elsewhere and get the crack welded up or replace with a secondhand heatshield from www.gradea-subaru.co.uk or remove it, depending on location you might be okay without or need heat wrap in it's place.

Thanks for that info Jolly Green Monster, I did mention that to subaru, but they denied the heatshield, as when you rev the car from ticking over past 4000rpm no noise/vibration?.
The car is still under the Manufactures warranty, will this still be covered by Subaru?

If it's not the heatshield, check your brake pipes where they run against the bulkhead above the d/p. The hard plastic pipe holders may be vibrating against the bulkhead.

I had a vibration/buzz that drove me mad until a kind scoobynetter lead me to it :D

What Sam says could also be the case..

Dissagree with the revving at stand still as with no load on the engine the engine as at a different location in the engine mounts, there is no movement on the gearbox etc..

Downpipe is bolted to turbo, gearbox and then in rubber hangers so moved with the engine and gearbox so it could be a compination of load and rpm etc..

Hope you sort it anyway

Sorted Sam

For those who are interested....
Went to Subaru yesterday who have fixed the problem.
Sam was spot on with his diagnostics, it was the brakes pipes Vibrating against the bulk heads.

Many Thanks Sam for your expert advise.

Cheers.

I've been called many things before, but never an expert! :D

PS my fix was to wedge a cut up mouse mat behind the pipes, worked a treat - what did Subaru do? ;)

ProdriveSTI 26 February 2004 02:23 PM

All subaru did was physically pull/move the pipes apart.
