Idles better with hole before MAF sensor unit?

When fitting my FMIC i changed the induction kit as the old one didn't fit properly to the MAF housing...
Its a K&N induction kit and has a small hole in the pipe that joins the MAF to the intake side...
I didn't think this was right as the MAF tells how much air is flowing and a hole after the MAF sensor would surely give an incorrect reading?
I blanked the hole and the car starts to dip at idle (almost stalling) and then returning to about 700rpm... opened the hole and its running nicely again...
Is this whats suposed to happen?

Thanks

Franko

Isn't that the hole that the pipe from the charcoal canister is supposed to go in???

Fatman 19 February 2004 09:22 PM

IIRC yes, that is where the charcoal canister plugs in.

Thanks for the replies guys :)
But whats a charcoal canistor?

Fatman 19 February 2004 10:45 PM

I'm not entirely sure, but (and this isn't meant to sound sarcastic) I think it's a canister containing some form of charcoal. It's used for absorbing some sort of vapours for emissions control.

ALi-B 19 February 2004 10:55 PM

Yes the charcoal cansiter absorbs the fuel vapour from the fuel tank, and releases back into the engine during normal driving. It's purely there for evaporative emissions control purposes.

And if the hole is allowing air to by-pass the MAF, then NO, this is not right. All air breathed in by the engine must go through the MAF for it to give the correct readings.

Cheers Fatman
I wonder if this should have been included in the kit... Will be looking into it.

Again thanks for the info Guys :D

isnt it about time you got to some of our Fenay Bridge meets Franko ?

would like to see what you've done to the car since last summer

Phil

Fatman 19 February 2004 11:10 PM

Do you mean the charcoal canister, Franko? No, that is fitted to the car as original equipment.

Franko 19 February 2004 11:11 PM

Hiya Phil mate

I know its been a long time since i've been meaning to come along but i can never seem to get away from work on time... i should be at the fun track day... have you had anything else done to your car? will you be at the track day? will be nice to see what you've had done too :)
since we met i've had a new up-pipe and a performance manifold fitted and just recently fitted a Hybrid FMIC :D cars running faster than ever need to have it on some rollers and then see what mod next... uprated fuel pump and presure reg should be next... if all is well i should be running at scoobyshootout 2004 too...

Franko 19 February 2004 11:14 PM

Thanks Fatman, if its already on the car its just a case of hooking it up to the induction kit then :D come to think of it, induction kit did come with instructions which i completely ignored

Fatman 19 February 2004 11:18 PM

Use instructions? Surely not! That's like admitting we don't know what we're doing! No, no, no... ;)

Franko 19 February 2004 11:20 PM
